2012 Giro Di Lombardia
The 2012 Giro di Lombardia or 2012 Il Lombardia was the 106th edition of the Giro di Lombardia single-day cycling race, often known as the ''Race of the Falling Leaves''. It was held on 29 September 2012, over a distance of , starting in Bergamo and ending in Lecco. It was the penultimate event of the season in the 2012 UCI World Tour. The very steep climb Muro di Sormano returned to the route during the 2012 edition after an absence of fifty years and was situated before the Madonna del Ghisallo climb. Joaquim Rodríguez () won the race after a solo breakaway initiated on the final climb of the day. He became the first Spaniard to win this Classic. 2012 UCI World Tour
The 2012 UCI World Tour was the fourth edition of the ranking system launched by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) in 2009. The series started with the Tour Down Under's opening stage on 17 January, and consisted of 14 stage races, 14 one-day races, and one team time trial (which only counted towards the team rankings). The Tour of Hangzhou which was originally included in the list of races was postponed until 2013. __TOC__ Teams The 18 UCI ProTeams competed in the World Tour, with UCI Professional Continental teams, or national squads, able to enter at the discretion of the organisers of each event. Philippe Gilbert (born 5 July 1982) is a Belgian former professional road bicycle racer, who is best known for winning the World Road Race Championships in 2012, and for being one of two riders, along with Davide Rebellin, to have won the three Ardennes classics – the Amstel Gold Race, La Flèche Wallonne and Liège–Bastogne–Liège – in a single season, which he accomplished in 2011. Gilbert also finished the 2011 season as the overall winner of the UCI World Tour. Alberto Contador Velasco (; born 6 December 1982) is a Spanish former professional cyclist. He is one of the most successful riders of his era, winning the Tour de France twice ( 2007, 2009), the Giro d'Italia twice (2008, 2015), and the Vuelta a España three times (2008, 2012, 2014). Oliver Zaugg (born 9 May 1981) is a Swiss former professional road bicycle racer, who competed professionally between 2004 and 2016 for , , , , and . Career Zaugg won his first major race in 2011, the Giro di Lombardia. He attacked on the Villa Vergano climb with to go, soloing on to victory. He was chased relentlessly by the leading group, but the chasers could not get to him. He crossed the finish line in Lecco with an advantage of 15 seconds over his nearest rival, Dan Martin of . In 2012, he tried to defend his title at the Giro di Lombardia, finishing in the chase group in eighth position as Joaquim Rodríguez () claimed the victory. Kevin De Weert (born 27 May 1982 in Duffel) is a former Belgian professional road bicycle racer. Eric Ryder Hesjedal (; born December 9, 1980) is a Canadian retired professional racing cyclist who competed in both mountain biking and road racing between 1998 and 2016. Hesjedal won a silver medal at the 1998 Junior, 2001 Under-23, and Elite world championship in mountain biking. He turned professional with in 2004 after several years with the continental team.
