2012 European Athletics Championships
The 2012 European Athletics Championships were held in Helsinki, Finland between 27 June and 1 July 2012. This edition marks the beginning of a new two-year cycle of the European Athletics Championships which were previously held every four years. The decision to grant the games for Helsinki was made by the European Athletics Congress on 9 November 2009. Another city that showed interest in hosting the event was Nuremberg, Germany, however Helsinki was in pole position during the whole process. This was the third time that the city had hosted the event, 1971 and 1994 being the other occasions. Wilson Kiprop (born 14 April 1987 in Soi, Uasin Gishu District) is a Kenyan long-distance runner, who specialises in the 10,000 metres and half marathon. He was the world champion at the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in 2010 and was the 10,000 m gold medalist at the 2010 African Championships in Athletics. Biography He started competing at the top level in 2008, winning competitions in Italy (cross and road races) and working under two Italian coaches, Renato Canova and Gabriele Nicola. He was the 2008 champion at the Cross della Vallagarina and the Corrida di San Geminiano. The following year he won the Vallagarina race for a second time running and came first at the Eurocross and Trofeo Sant'Agata races. Adil Bouafif (born 31 December 1978) is a Swedish long distance runner who also competes in marathon. He has competed for Sweden since 2010. Career He came to Sweden from Morocco in 2007 and became a full Swedish citizen in 2010; he has competed for Sweden ever since. Bouafif ran the marathon at the 2010 European Athletics Championships in Barcelona, Spain. He did not complete the race. Abdi Nageeye (born 2 March 1989) is a Somali-Dutch long-distance runner from the Netherlands. He won the silver medal in the marathon at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Nageeye placed third at the 2022 New York City Marathon. He is the Dutch national record holder for the 10 km road race, half marathon and marathon. Early life Nageeye was born on 2 March 1989 in Mogadishu, Somalia. At the age of 6, he was resettled as a refugee in the Netherlands. After spending four years in the Netherlands, he then lived with his family in Syria and Somalia. Afterwards, Nageeye returned to the Netherlands via Ethiopia and was adopted by a family in Oldebroek. Nageeye is fluent in Somali, Dutch, Arabic, English, and Amharic. Stefano La Rosa (born 28 September 1985 in Grosseto) is an Italian long distance runner. He is a five-time Italian champion (twice over 10,000 metres and three times over 5000 metres). Biography Of Sicilian descent, as a junior athlete, he came 52nd at the 2003 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. He came 16th over 5000 metres at the 2004 World Junior Championships in Athletics, but managed a 1500 metres/5000 m double at the Italian junior championships.
