The 2012 Anchorage mayoral election was held on April 20, 2012, to elect the mayor of Anchorage, Alaska. It saw reelection of incumbent mayor Dan Sullivan. Since Sullivan obtained a 45% plurality in the initial round, no runoff was necessitated. Dan Sullivan (Anchorage Mayor)
Daniel Albert Sullivan (born June 16, 1951) is an American businessman and politician who served as the mayor of Anchorage from 2009 to 2015 and on the Anchorage Assembly from 1999 to 2008. The son of Anchorage's longest-serving mayor, George M. Sullivan, he was the Republican nominee for lieutenant governor of Alaska in the 2014 election but he and incumbent Governor Sean Parnell were defeated by the ticket of Independent Bill Walker and Democrat Byron Mallott. Early life and education Sullivan was born the third of seven sons, and nine children overall, of George Murray and Margaret Mary (née Eagan) Sullivan. His parents were from the Alaskan communities of Valdez and Fairbanks, respectively. The Sullivan family came to Anchorage from Fairbanks in 1958 and 1959, when George Sullivan was hired as a regional executive for Consolidated Freightways. This is a list of mayors of Anchorage, Alaska, United States. Anchorage was incorporated as a city on November 23, 1920. The Greater Anchorage Area Borough, which encompassed the city, was created in January 1964. The two were merged in a unified government called the Municipality of Anchorage on September 15, 1975. Under the current mayoral system, the mayor of the Municipality of Anchorage is elected in a non-partisan election to a three-year term and they are limited to two terms in office. The 2012 Alaska general elections were held on November 6, 2012. Primary elections were held on August 28, 2012. U.S. House of Representatives Republican incumbent Don Young, who has represented Alaska's at-large congressional district since 1973, was running for re-election. He defeated John Cox, a retired Navy officer who also ran for the seat in 2010 United States House of Representatives election in Alaska, 2010, and Terre Gales, an asset manager and Air Force veteran, in the Republican primary. Alaska House of Representatives, State Representative Sharon Cissna sought and received the Democratic nomination to challenge Young.
