2011–12 Sheffield United F.C. Season
Sheffield United Football Club (known as the Blades) participated in League One, the third level of English football for the first time in 23 years having been relegated from the Championship at the end of the previous season. It was also their first appearance in both the Football League Trophy and the first round proper of the FA Cup for a similar length of time, as well as being the first season under new manager Danny Wilson. United began the season well, recording consistently sound results in Football League One and nearing the position required for an immediate return to the Championship. By the turn of the year, the squad was well positioned for promotion. The English Football League Championship (often referred to as the Championship for short or the Sky Bet Championship for sponsorship purposes) is the highest division of the English Football League (EFL) and second-highest overall in the English football league system, after the Premier League. The league is contested by 24 clubs. Jamie John Ward (born 12 May 1986) is a professional Association football, footballer who plays as a Forward (association football), striker for Ilkeston Town where he is player-manager. He has represented the Northern Ireland national football team, Northern Ireland national team. Dave Morrison (born 30 November 1974) is an English former professional footballer. Morrison started his professional football career with Chelmsford City, before being sold to Peterborough United in May 1994 for a fee of £50,000.Mike Williams & Tony Williams (2012) ''Non-League Club Directory 2013'', p. 277 During his time with The Posh, Morrison made 77 appearances and scored 12 goals. William Dearden (born 11 February 1944) is an English former association football, footballer and manager who is now chief Scout (association football), scout at Sheffield United F.C., Sheffield United. As a player, he scored 101 goals in 404 league games in a 16-year career in the English Football League. Frank Charles Barlow (born 15 October 1946) is an English former footballer who moved into coaching and club management since retiring from playing. Born in Mexborough, England, he spent the bulk of his playing career at Sheffield United before moving to Chesterfield for a spell. After retiring from playing he moved into management and coaching, managing Chesterfield and Scunthorpe United before having spells as caretaker manager with both Nottingham Forest and Wigan Athletic.
