2011 In France
The 2011 French presidential election was held on 22 April and 6 May 2011 and marked the end of Presidency of Nicolas Sarkozy, Nicolas Sarkozy's presidency. The Socialist Party candidate, François Hollande, defeated the incumbent President Sarkozy and became the first left-wing President of the Fifth Republic. The first round of voting saw a record turnout of 80.7%, with Sarkozy taking 27.2% of the vote and François Hollande, Hollande taking 28.6%. This marked the first time since 1965 that an incumbent president had failed to win the first round. The second round, held on 6 May, saw a significantly lower turnout of 79.5%, with Hollande taking 51.6% of the vote and Nicolas Sarkozy, Sarkozy taking 48.4%. 2011 French Cantonal Elections
Cantonal elections to elect half the membership of the general councils of France's 100 departments were held on 20 and 27 March 2011. Electoral system The cantonal elections use a two-round system similar to that employed in the country's legislative elections. *Councillors are elected from single-member constituencies (cantons). *A candidate securing the votes of at least 25% of the canton's registered voters and more than 50% of the total number of votes actually cast in the first round of voting is thereby elected. Édouard Glissant
Édouard Glissant (21 September 1928 – 3 February 2011) was a French writer, poet, philosopher, and literary critic from Martinique. He is widely recognised as one of the most influential figures in Caribbean thought and cultural commentary and Francophone literature. Life Édouard Glissant was born in Sainte-Marie, Martinique. He studied at the Lycée Schœlcher, named after the abolitionist Victor Schœlcher, where the poet Aimé Césaire had studied and to which he returned as a teacher. Césaire had met Léon Damas there; later in Paris, France, they would join with Léopold Senghor, a poet and the future first president of Senegal, to formulate and promote the concept of '' negritude''. Césaire did not teach Glissant, but did serve as an inspiration to him (although Glissant sharply criticized many aspects of his philosophy); another student at the school at that time was Frantz Fanon. Maria Schneider (actress)
Maria-Hélène Schneider (27 March 1952 – 3 February 2011), known professionally as Maria Schneider, was a French actress. In 1972, at the age of 19, she starred opposite Marlon Brando in ''Last Tango in Paris'', but being traumatised by a rape scene and hounded by unsavoury publicity negatively affected her subsequent career. Although Michelangelo Antonioni's '' The Passenger'' (1975) showcased her abilities, a reputation for walking out of films mid-production resulted in her becoming unwelcome in the industry. However, she re-established stability in her personal and professional life in the early 1980s, and became an advocate for equality and improving the conditions actresses worked under. She continued acting in film and TV until a few years before she died in 2011 after a long illness. Jean Dutourd
Jean Gwenaël Dutourd (; 14 January 192017 January 2011) was a French novelist. Biography Dutourd was born in Paris. His mother died when he was seven years old. At the age of twenty, he was taken prisoner fifteen days after Germany's invasion of France in World War II. He escaped six weeks later and returned to Paris where he studied philosophy at the Sorbonne. He entered the Resistance and was again arrested in early 1944. He escaped and took part in the Liberation of Paris. He was a candidate for the Democratic Union of Labour (UDT) in the legislative elections of 1967. His first work, ''Le Complexe de César'', appeared in 1946 and received the Prix Stendhal. He was elected to the Académie française on 30 November 1978. In 1997 he was elected as a member of Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in the Department of Language and Literature. Dutourd died in Paris on 17 January 2011, at the age of 91. 2011 European Floods
The 2011 floods in Europe, were caused by a series of storms in the fall, including Cyclone Meeno and Tropical Storm Rolf. The floods occurred in late October–early November in Spain, France, Italy, and Ireland. In Italy, the River Po rose in Turin and a number of people (including two children) died in Genoa. A state of emergency in the Italian regions of Liguria and Tuscany was declared after floods killed 10 people on 27 October, causing mudslides. In Ireland, a state of emergency was declared in Dublin three days before. Cyclone Meena also induced heavy rain and flooding in parts of North Africa.
