2011 São Toméan Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in São Tomé and Príncipe in 2011, the first round beginning on 17 July 2011 with a Run-off election, run-off held on 7 August 2011. Incumbent List of heads of government of São Tomé and Príncipe, President Fradique de Menezes has served the maximum two terms and could not constitutionally seek a third term. The final result saw former president Manuel Pinto da Costa, aged 74, elected in a narrow victory against Speaker of Parliament Evaristo Carvalho. The first round was contested by approximately 120 candidates. Democratization, or democratisation, is the transition to a more democratic political regime, including substantive political changes moving in a democratic direction. Elsa Maria Teixeira de Barros Pinto is a São Tomé and Príncipe politician, and the country's former Defence and Justice Minister and from December 2018 until September 2020 Foreign Minister. In 2003 and 2004 (at least), she was a member of the Council of Ministers, as Secretary of State for Administrative Reform and Public Administration, and was a member of the Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé and Príncipe/Social Democratic Party (MLSTP-PSD) political party. Democratic Convergence Party (São Tomé And Príncipe)
The Democratic Convergence Party-Reflection Group ( pt, Partido de Convergência Democrática-Grupo de Reflexão), or PCD-GR, is a political party in São Tomé and Príncipe. It was founded on 4 November 1990 by Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé and Príncipe (MLSTP) dissidents, independents, and young professionals. Leonel Mário d'Alva is the party leader. The one-party period of São Tomé and Príncipe lasted from the country's independence in 1975 to 1991, when the dominant party, Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé and Príncipe – Social Democratic Party, lost in the first multiparty elections to the PCD-GR. The party won the 1991 parliamentary election and was the ruling party from 1991 to 1994. Maria das Neves Ceita Baptista de Sousa (born 1958) served as the 11th prime minister of São Tomé and Príncipe. She was a key figure in the Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé and Príncipe-Social Democratic Party (MLSTP-PSD) and became the first woman head of government in the country. Career Maria das Neves received education as an economist in Cuba with specialization in public finances. Aurélio Pires Quaresma Martins (born November 24, 1966) is a São Toméan journalist, businessman and politician, who until May 2018 was leader of the Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé and Príncipe/Social Democratic Party (MLSTP/PSD). Journalist and businessman Martins started his career as a journalist at São Tomé and Príncipe's National Radio (Rádio Nacional) between 1984 and 1985, and later worked at Angola's National Radio (RNA) from 1999 to 2007.
