Solomon Islands
Solomon Islands is an island country consisting of six major islands and over 900 smaller islands in Oceania, to the east of Papua New Guinea and north-west of Vanuatu. It has a land area of , and a population of approx. 700,000. Its capital, Honiara, is located on the largest island, Guadalcanal. The country takes its name from the wider area of the Solomon Islands (archipelago), which is a collection of Melanesian islands that also includes the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (currently a part of Papua New Guinea), but excludes the Santa Cruz Islands. Steve Laore
Steve Eresi Laore (1963/1964 – 26 August 2010) was a Solomon Islands politician and member of parliament. Formerly a mechanic and businessman, and owner of a construction company, he defeated Augustine Taneko to become MP for the Shortlands constituency. He was a member of the Pacific Casino Hotel group that elevated Danny Philip to the position of prime minister A prime minister, premier or chief of cabinet is the head of the cabinet and the leader of the ministers in the executive branch of government, often in a parliamentary or semi-presidential system. Under those systems, a prime minister is not .... On 26 August 2010, only 22 days after he took office, he collapsed at a dinner celebrating Philip's victory and was pronounced dead at the hospital. 2010 Solomon Islands General Election
General elections were held in the Solomon Islands on 4 August 2010. The election date was announced in May 2010 by Prime Minister Derek Sikua. Although the announcement was deemed to be premature, as only the Governor General has the authority to announce the election date upon the advice of the Electoral Commission, the election date remained the same. Candidates There were a total of 509 candidates, including 25 women. Results The event was overseen by international election observers connected with the United Nations International Election Observation Coordination Team. The elections were described as peaceful, although strong concerns were expressed about voter registration irregularities. 25 incumbents were returned and 25 were replaced (including three seats where the incumbent chose not to recontest and one seat that was vacant due to the death of Edward Huni'ehu). Christopher Laore
Christopher Laore is a Solomon Islands politician. A physiotherapist, he worked as Director of Rehabilitation Services at the National Referral Hospital in Honiara. In August 2010, his brother Steve Laore was elected first-time Member of Parliament for the constituency of Shortlands, in the Western Province, but died suddenly just three weeks later. Christopher Laore resigned from his position in the hospital to stand as a candidate in the resulting bye-election in March 2011, which he won with 58.9% of the vote. Upon being elected, he stated: "At this time I don't have any plans and visions. My people want me to come and implement the plans and visions of my brother", which he described as improving the livelihood of the people and helping them be self-reliant.
