2011 International Criminal Court Judges Election
Six judges of the International Criminal Court were elected during the 10th session of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court in New York between 12 and 21 December 2011. The judges elected, Anthony Carmona of Trinidad and Tobago, Miriam Defensor Santiago of the Philippines, Chile Eboe-Osuji of Nigeria, Robert Fremr of the Czech Republic, Olga Venecia Herrera Carbuccia of the Dominican Republic and Howard Morrison (lawyer), Howard Morrison of the United Kingdom, took office on 11 March 2012. Background The judges elected at this session were to replace those six judges who were elected at the first election of ICC judges in 2003 for a full term of nine years; they were also to serve for nine years until 2021. The election was governed by the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Judges Of The International Criminal Court
The eighteen judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC) are elected for nine-year terms by the member-countries of the court. Candidates must be nationals of those countries and they must "possess the qualifications required in their respective States for appointment to the highest judicial offices". A judge may be disqualified from "any case in which his or her impartiality might reasonably be doubted on any ground", and a judge may be removed from office if found "to have committed serious misconduct or a serious breach of his or her duties" or is unable to exercise his or her functions. The judges are organized into three divisions: the Pre-Trial Division, Trial Division, and Appeals Division. Patricia Wald
Patricia Ann McGowan Wald (September 16, 1928 – January 12, 2019) was an American judge who served as the Chief United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit (D.C. Circuit) and as a judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. She was the first woman to be appointed to the D.C. Circuit and the first to serve as Chief Judge of that court. She served as a member of the American Bar Association's International Criminal Court Project and on the Council of the American Law Institute. Early life Wald was born in Torrington, Connecticut, to Joseph F. McGowan and Margaret O'Keefe on September 16, 1928, as their only child. Richard Goldstone
Richard Joseph Goldstone (born 26 October 1938) is a South African former judge. After working for 17 years as a commercial lawyer, he was appointed by the South African government to serve on the Transvaal Supreme Court from 1980 to 1989 and the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of South Africa from 1990 to 1994. He is considered to be one of several liberal judges who issued key rulings that undermined apartheid from within the system by tempering the worst effects of the country's racial laws. Among other important rulings, Goldstone made the Group Areas Act – under which non-whites were banned from living in "whites only" areas – virtually unworkable by restricting evictions. As a result, prosecutions under the act virtually ceased. Sir Howard Andrew Clive Morrison (born 20 July 1949), is a British lawyer and from 2011 to 2021 a Judge of the International Criminal Court based in The Hague, Netherlands. Currently UK advisor on war crimes to the Ukrainian Prosecutor General. Legal career Morrison was called to the Bar at Gray's Inn in 1977, following post-graduate study at the Inns of Court School of Law, where he was subsequently appointed a Bencher in 2008. From 1977 to 1985, he practised on the Midland and Oxford Circuit, including working in courts martial in the UK and Germany. In 1985, he was appointed Resident Magistrate and then Chief Magistrate of Fiji, and Senior Magistrate for Tuvalu. Władysław Czapliński (jurist)
Władysław Czapliński (3 October 1905 in Tuchów – 17 August 1981 in Wrocław) was a Polish historian, a professor of the University of Wrocław, author of many popular books about Polish history. He finished his studies at the Jagiellonian University in 1927 in the Second Polish Republic, and for the next several years he was a teacher of history. During the Second World War he took part in the underground education in Poland during World War II. After the war he moved to Wrocław, where he worked at the local university until his retirement in 1975. He received many awards, including an honoris causa diploma from University of Gdańsk.
