2011 Botswana Population And Housing Census
The 2011 Botswana Population and Housing Census was the latest Census in Botswana, national census of Botswana. The enumeration was managed by the Statistics Botswana (formerly Central Statistics Office) and took place over ten days starting on 22 August 2011. The census counted a total population of 2,024,787, a 20.5% increase from the 2001 Census. Cost The total budget for the 2011 Census was 243,575,993 pula (US$35.3 million as of August 2011) with the Botswana government funding all the costs. Over P100,000,000 was planned to pay for personnel. Controversy Bushmen living in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve boycotted the census in response to an earlier situation where the Bushmen were not provided polling stations in the 2009 election. Jumanda Gakelebone spoke on behalf of the Bushmen, saying that "the government does not recognise us [the Bushmen] as a people. So why count us? 'Statistics Botswana(StatsBots) is the National statistical bureau of Botswana. The organization was previously undethe Ministry of Finance and development planningas a department and was called Central Statistics Office. The organisation was initially set up in 1967 through an Act of Parliament – the Statistics Act (Cap 17) and thereafter transformed into a parastatal through the revised Statistics Act of 2009. This act gives the Statistics Botswana the mandate and authority to collect, process, compile, analyse, publish, disseminate and archive official national statistics. It is also responsible for "coordinating, monitoring and supervising the National Statistical System" in Botswana. The San peoples (also Saan), or Bushmen, are members of various Khoe, Tuu, or Kxʼa-speaking indigenous hunter-gatherer cultures that are the first cultures of Southern Africa, and whose territories span Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and South Africa. Central Kalahari Game Reserve
Central Kalahari Game Reserve is an extensive national park in the Kalahari Desert of Botswana. Established in 1961 it covers an area of (larger than the Netherlands, and almost 10% of Botswana's total land area), making it the second largest game reserve in the world. History The Bushmen, or San, have inhabited the lands for thousands of years since they roamed the area as nomadic hunters. However, since the mid-1990s the Botswana government has tried to relocate the Bushmen from the reserve, claiming they were a drain on financial resources despite revenues from tourism. In 1997, three quarters of the entire San population were relocated from the reserve, and in October 2005 the government had resumed the forced relocation into resettlement camps outside of the park leaving only about 250 permanent occupiers.
