2010 Cook Islands General Election
General elections were held in the Cook Islands on 17 November 2010 in order to elect 24 MPs to the Cook Islands Parliament. The elections were won by the Cook Islands Party, which won 16 of the 24 seats. Voter turnout was 78%. A binding referendum on whether the number of MPs should be reduced from 24 was held at the same time as the election. Parliament will sit for the first time following the election in February 2011. Background The Democratic Party government of Prime Minister Jim Marurai, which had governed since 2004, effectively collapsed in December 2009 after Finance Minister Terepai Maoate was sacked for his mishandling of a bid to buy the Toa fuel tank farm. This resulted in a mass-resignation of Democratic Party cabinet members, the expulsion of Marurai and his supporters, and the withdrawal of support for the government. 2006 Cook Islands General Election
General elections were held in the Cook Islands on 27 September 2006 in order to elect 24 MPs to the Cook Islands Parliament. The Democratic Party remained in power, winning 15 of 24 seats. A total of 8,497 voters turned out to vote. The election was called two years early after the ruling Democratic party lost its majority in Parliament. In July 2006, Environment Minister Teina Bishop resigned from Cabinet and joined the opposition Cook Islands Party. Shortly afterwards, the Cook Islands Party won a by-election in Matevera, eliminating the government's majority. The government pre-empted a formal vote of no-confidence by dissolving Parliament and calling an election. Cook Islands Party leader Sir Geoffrey Henry announced his retirement during the campaign, resulting in his replacement as leader of the opposition by Tom Marsters. The margin of error is a statistic expressing the amount of random sampling error in the results of a survey. The larger the margin of error, the less confidence one should have that a poll result would reflect the result of a census of the entire population. Toanui Isamaela is a Cook Islands politician and member of the Cook Islands Parliament. He is a member of the One Cook Islands Movement. Teremoana Tapi Taio is a Cook Islands politician and former Cabinet Minister. He is a member of the Cook Islands Democratic Party. Taio was elected to the Cook Islands Parliament for the electorate of Akaoa at the 1999 election. He served in the cabinet of Robert Woonton, and was responsible for the Finance portfolio following the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Terepai Maoate from the Cabinet in 2003. Teariki Heather
Teariki William Heather (born 30 July 1959) is a Cook Islands politician and former Cabinet minister who served as Deputy Prime Minister of the Cook Islands from 2013 to 2018. Previously a member of the Cook Islands Party, he is now the leader of the Cook Islands United Party. Early life Heather was born on Rarotonga and educated at Arorangi Primary school and Tereora College. He is the younger brother of Democratic Party MP William (Smiley) Heather. He was a businessman before entering politics. Political career In March 2003 Heather founded the Cook Islands National Party with the aim of securing political reform, including a shorter Parliamentary term. Te Kura O Te ʻAu People's Movement
Te Kura O Te Au People's Movement is a political movement in the Cook Islands. It has several founding members, but its current leader is Tim Tepaki. It is currently unrepresented in the Cook Islands Parliament. The People's Movement was originally established in 2009 as a pressure group in response to the introduction on Sunday flights to the island of Aitutaki. It initially denied being a political party, but in May 2010 confirmed that it would contest the 2010 general election. The party supports political reform, including a "major" reduction in the size of parliament. It proposes suspending all Sunday flights to Aitutaki, followed by a referendum to determine whether than ban will be made permanent. The party will select candidates in July 2010. Party Tumu
The Party Tumu was a political party in the Cook Islands. It was founded in July 2010 by Cook Islands Party MP Albert (Peto) Nicholas after a split over candidate selection. Originally known as the "Cook Islands Party Tumu" ("real" or "true" Cook Islands Party), the party was forced to rename itself after the CIP successfully sought a court injunction preventing them from using the name Cook Islands Party. The breakaway party attracted the support of influential CIP backer Tupui Ariki Henry, son of CIP founder and former Prime Minister Albert Henry, but it has not attracted the support of any other CIP MPs. The party's aims were the same as those of the CIP: nationalism and economic development.
