2009 UCI Track Cycling World Championships – Women's Scratch
The Women's Scratch was one of the 8 women's events at the 2009 UCI Track Cycling World Championships, held in Pruszków, Poland. 20 Cyclists from 20 different countries participated in the race. Because of the number of entries, there were no qualification rounds for this discipline. The competition consisted on 40 laps, making a total of 10 km and was run on 27 March 2009. Ellen van Dijk could not cement her reputation as the 2008 World champion and it was the 2007 World champion and 2008 silver medalist Yumari González from Cuba who won the scratch race with Elizabeth Armitstead and Belinda Goss Belinda Goss (born 6 January 1984 in Devonport, Tasmania) is a retired Australian professional racing cyclist. Rainbow Jersey
The rainbow jersey is the distinctive jersey worn by the reigning world champion in a cycling discipline, since 1927. The jersey is predominantly white with five horizontal bands in the UCI colours around the chest. From the bottom up the colours are: green, yellow, black, red and blue; the same colours that appear in the rings on the Olympic flag. The tradition is applied to all disciplines, including road racing, track racing, cyclo-cross, BMX, Trials and the disciplines within mountain biking. A world champion must wear the jersey when competing in the same discipline, category and speciality for which the title was won. For example, the world road race champion would wear the garment while competing in stage races (except for time trial stages) and one-day races, but would not be entitled to wear it during time trials. Giorgia Bronzini
Giorgia Bronzini (born 3 August 1983) is an Italian former professional racing cyclist, who rode professionally between 2003 and 2017. She won the women's road race in the UCI Road World Championships in both 2010 and 2011 and the women's points race in the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in 2009. Born in Piacenza, Bronzini took a total of 80 victories on the road and the track, including stages of the Giro d'Italia Femminile, La Route de France, the Tour of Qatar, the Tour of California, and the Tour of Chongming Island. After a 16-year career, in August 2018 Bronzini announced that she would retire at the end of the season and become a ''directeur sportif'' with Trek Bicycle Corporation's new women's team, in 2019. She remained with the team until the end of the 2021 season, when she joined in a similar role. Tara Whitten
Tara Alice Whitten (born 13 July 1980) is a Canadian former racing cyclist. Career A former cross-country skier from Edmonton, Alberta, Whitten began track racing seriously in 2008 having dabbled in it since 2005. The same year she won the points race and individual pursuit at the Canadian National Track Championships, and also took the bronze medal in the scratch race and 500 meter time trial events. Whitten began the 2008–2009 track cycling season strongly, winning two silver medals at first round of the Track World Cup in Manchester, United Kingdom, in October. She went on to take two bronze medals in the third round in Cali, Colombia, and a further two silver medals in the fifth and final round in Copenhagen, Denmark, in February 2009. María Luisa Calle
María Luisa Calle Williams (born October 3, 1968) is a Colombian professional racing cyclist. She was born in Medellín. In the 2004 Summer Olympics, she won a bronze medal in the cycling women's points race, the first Colombian to win a medal in cycling. She was forced to return the medal after positive test result for the banned stimulant heptaminol. The medal was returned, however, after the test result was proven incorrect. On October 16, 2011, at the 2011 Pan American Games' individual time trial, Calle, 43 years old at the time, won the gold medal with a time of 28:04.82. On 22 July 2015, it was disclosed that she had tested positive for GHRP2 at the 2015 Pan American Games and was subsequently banned for four years. Alena Vasileŭna Amialiusik ( be, Алена Васільеўна Амялюсік; born 6 February 1989) is a Belarusian road bicycle racer, who rides for UCI Women's WorldTeam . She competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the Women's road race, finishing 15th. She was announced as a member of the squad for the 2015 season. Shelley Olds
Shelley Olds (born September 30, 1980) is an American former professional bicycle racing, racing cyclist. Career Olds was born and raised in Groton, Massachusetts. She studied health and human performance at Roanoke College in Virginia, and was captain of their women's soccer team. A star on the soccer pitch, Olds was a two-time NSCAA All-South Region selection, four-time All-ODAC selection and the 2002 ODAC Player of the Year. She was inducted into the Roanoke Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016. After college, she moved to California and was introduced to cycling by Rob Evans, whom she later married. She started racing locally on the road, quickly moving up in the ranks and winning the Road Cycling State Championships. Lauren Ellis (born 19 April 1989) is a New Zealand former road and track cyclist. Career Ellis rode the team pursuit at the 2008–09 UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classics in Beijing with Kaytee Boyd and Alison Shanks, in a time of 3:28.044, becoming the fastest qualifiers. They went on to take the gold medal in a time of 3:24.421, setting the second fastest time in the world behind the 3:22.425 world record set by Great Britain at Manchester in 2008.
