Freestyle Swimming
Freestyle is a category of Swimming (sport), swimming competition, defined by the rules of World Aquatics, in which competitors are subject to only a few limited restrictions on their swimming stroke. Freestyle races are the most common of all swimming competitions, with distances beginning with and reaching , also known as the mile. The term 'freestyle stroke' is sometimes used as a synonym for 'front crawl', as front crawl is the fastest surface swimming stroke. It is now the most common stroke used in freestyle competitions. Ellie Simmonds
Eleanor May Simmonds (born 11 November 1994) is a British retired Paralympian swimmer who competed in S6 events. She came to national attention when she competed in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, winning two gold medals for Great Britain. She was the youngest member of the team, at the age of 13. In 2012, she was again selected for the Great Britain squad, this time swimming at a home games in London. She won another two golds in London, including setting a World Record in the 400m freestyle, and a further gold medal at the Rio Paralympics in 2016, this time setting a world record for the 200m medley. Louise Watkin
Louise Stephanie Watkin (née Niklasson; born 13 August 1992 in Stockholm, Sweden) is a British Paralympic swimmer. Watkin swims in the S9 category and represented Great Britain in the 2012 Summer Paralympics, in which she won two silver and two bronze medals. She won one silver and three bronze medals at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing. Career history She came to the UK in 1996. She was born with Upper Limb Deficiency, and is missing her left hand. After trying out several sports and activities as a child, she settled on swimming at the age of 12. Her first major competition was the World Championships in Durban, South Africa in 2006, and since then she has competed in the Beijing Paralympic Games in 2008, the European Championships in Reykjavik in 2009, and also the World Short Course Championships in Rio (also in 2009). S9, SB8, SM9 are para-swimming classifications used for categorizing swimmers based on their level of disability. Swimmers in this class generally have severe weakness in one leg. This class includes a number of different disabilities including people with amputations and cerebral palsy. The classification is governed by the International Paralympic Committee, and competes at the Paralympic Games. Definition This classification is for swimming. In the classification title, S represents Freestyle, Backstroke and Butterfly strokes. SB means breaststroke. SM means individual medley. Heather Frederiksen Order of the British Empire, MBE (born 30 December 1985) is a retired British Paralympic swimmer. She is former world record holder in the women's S8 100 m backstroke, 50 m freestyle, 100 m freestyle, 200 m freestyle and 400 m freestyle events. , she still holds European records in the S8 200 m and 400 m freestyle. Erel Halevi
Erel Halevi (Hebrew: אראל הלוי; born 13 January 1991) is an Israeli swimmer, who competes for her nation internationally. As well as taking part in the 2012 and 2016 Summer Paralympics, she has also won two bronze medals at the IPC Swimming European Championships. Career Erel Halevi was born on 13 January 1991. At the age of 11, she became reliant on a wheelchair due to an autoimmune disease, learning to walk on crutches after some time. Halevi underwent rehabilitation at Sheba Medical Center for several years, but saw no further improvement in her condition. She remained positive, as she had already seen progress in moving from the wheelchair to crutches. Although given the option not to serve due to her medical condition, Halevi volunteered for the Israeli Navy as she felt that serving in the Israeli Defense Forces formed a part of a normal life for people from her country. Verena Schott
Verena Schott (born 6 March 1989) is a German paraswimmer and Paralympic medal winner. Biography Schott was born in 1989 in Greifswald. At the age of three, she and her family moved to Bennewitz, Saxony; when she was eight, she took up swimming and joined a swimming club in nearby Wurzen. In 2002, she was severely injured riding her bicycle when a van hit her while overtaking. This left her with incomplete paraplegia and she now uses a wheelchair. She competes in the S7, SM6 and SB5 classifications. (search for "Schott") In 2010 Schott left the club in Leipzig where she had been training when she moved to Berlin to study biology at the Humboldt University of Berlin. Kirsten Bruhn (born 3 November 1969 in Eutin) is a former German female Paralympic swimmer. She learnt to swim when she was three. She began competing at ten before an accident in 1991.
