2008–09 McGill Martlets Women's Ice Hockey Season
The McGill Martlets represented McGill University in the 2008-09 Canadian Interuniversity Sport women's hockey season. The Martlets posted an unblemished 33-0 record against CIS opponents to go undefeated for the second straight season en route to capturing another CIS banner. Catherine Ward, Chantal Gauvin and goaltender Kalie Townsend were the only graduating players from the Martlets. Canadian Interuniversity Sport Women's Ice Hockey Championship
The Golden Path Trophy is a national collegiate sports award, presented annually to the women's ice hockey champions of U Sports, Canada's governing body for university sports. The trophy was donated by Katherine Cartwright in 1998, which is when the championship was first contested. Cartwright was the first head coach of the Queen's Gaels women's hockey program in 1971 and led the movement to reinstate women's hockey at the collegiate level in 1960, following a nine-year hiatus. History The championship has been competed for in U Sports since 1998, when the sport was established in what was then known as the Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union. Prior to that, only teams from Ontario would compete for a women's ice hockey championship. Canadian Interuniversity Sport
U Sports (stylized as U SPORTS) is the national sport governing body of university sport in Canada, comprising the majority of degree-granting universities in the country. Catherine Ward
Catherine Ward (born February 27, 1987) is a member of the Canada women's national ice hockey team. She was also a member of the 2008–09 McGill Martlets women's hockey season, which won a Canadian Interuniversity Sport title. She was drafted 7th overall by the Montreal Stars in the 2011 CWHL Draft. Ward established herself as one of Canada's stars on the blue line playing for the Canadian U22 team and for the 2009 Women's World Championship team and the 2010 Olympic gold medal winning team. While with Martlets at McGill University, Ward set a QSSF record for points by a defenseman, and in 2007 became the first Martlet to earn the CIS rookie-of-the-year honour since the inception of the award in 2001. She set new McGill single-season marks for most goals, assists and points in her varsity debut, finishing second among CIS defensemen with 22 points despite playing in only 16 conference games. Charline Labonté
Charline Labonté (born October 15, 1982) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. Labonté played professionally for the Montreal Stars/Les Canadiennes de Montreal of the Canadian Women's Hockey League. She was a member of the Canada women's national ice hockey team that won three gold medals at the Olympics and two gold medals in the World Championships. She is an alumna of the McGill Martlets hockey program. Labonté now lives in Montreal, and graduated from McGill University with a degree in Physical Education. Labonté was named to the 2014 Olympic roster for Canada. She would be the winning goaltender for Les Canadiennes de Montreal in the final of the 2017 Clarkson Cup. The McGill Martlets ice hockey, McGill Martlets women's ice hockey team represented McGill University during the 2011–12 CIS women's ice hockey season. The Martlets were unable to repeat as Canadian Interuniversity Sport women's ice hockey championship, national champions for the second consecutive season. The McGill Martlets represented McGill University in the 2010-11 Canadian Interuniversity Sport women's hockey season. The Martlets attempted to win their third Canadian Interuniversity Sport women's ice hockey championship. Their head coach was Peter Smith and he was assisted by Amey Doyle, Stewart McCarthey and Shauna Denis. The McGill Martlets will represent McGill University in the 2009-10 Canadian Interuniversity Sport women's hockey season. The Martlets were not able to win their third Canadian Interuniversity Sport women's ice hockey championship. The Martlets head coach is Amey Doyle.
