2008–09 EHF Women's Champions League
The EHF Women's Champions League 2008/09 was the 16th edition of the EHF Women's Champions League, a team handball, handball competition for top women's clubs of Europe managed by the European Handball Federation. It was won by Danish club Viborg HK who defeated Hungarian Győri ETO KC, Győri Audi ETO KC at the finals with an aggregate score of 50–49. It was the second title for Viborg and the fifth for a Denmark, Danish team. German international Grit Jurack was the tournament's top scorer with 113 goals. The EHF Women's Champions League is the competition for the top women's team handball, handball clubs in Europe, organised annually by the European Handball Federation (EHF). It is the most prestigious tournament for clubs, with the champions of Europe's top national leagues participating. Tournament structure Each year, the EHF publishes a ranking list of its member federations. The first 27 nations are allowed to participate in the tournament with their national champion. The national federations are allowed to request extra places or upgrades from the EHF European League. The EHF Champions League is divided into five stages. Depending on the ranking of their national federation and of the criteria list, teams can enter the competition in either qualification or the group phase. Sociedad Deportiva Itxako, known as Asfi Itxako for sponsorship reasons, was a Spanish women's handball team from Estella-Lizarra, Navarre. Itxako were four times Spanish league winners and the EHF Women's Champions League runners-up. History Itxako Reyno de Navarra is the professional top level women's team of the S.D. Larvik Håndballklubb, is a professional women's handball club from Larvik, Norway. The club has won 36 titles total in both the Eliteserien (women's handball), Norwegian League and the Norwegian Women's Handball Cup, Norwegian Cup, and won the Women's EHF Champions League, EHF Champions League in 2011. Elda was promoted in 1992 to the División de Honor, where it played for the next two decades. Hypo Niederösterreich (Hypo NÖ) is an Austrian women's handball club, headquartered in Maria Enzersdorf. They are one of the most successful teams on the EHF Champions League, having won the title eight times. They are also former winners of the EHF Champions Trophy in 2000.
