2008 UCI Road World Championships – Women's Road Race
The women's road race of the 2008 UCI Road World Championships cycling event took place on 27 September in Varese, Italy. The course comprised eight laps around a 17.35-kilometre route, making a total distance of 138.8 km. Each lap featured two ascents: the first at Montello (6.5% gradient for 1.15 kilometres); and the second at Ronchi, Gallarate (4.5% for 3.13 kilometres). The race included a total of 1,937 metres of climbing. Pre-race favourites included Varese local rider Noemi Cantele and her teammates Tatiana Guderzo and Giorgia Bronzini, Marianne Vos of the Netherlands, Judith Arndt of Germany (champion in 2004), reigning Olympic champion Nicole Cooke and silver medallist Emma Johansson. Rainbow Jersey
The rainbow jersey is the distinctive jersey worn by the reigning world champion in a cycling discipline, since 1927. The jersey is predominantly white with five horizontal bands in the UCI colours around the chest. From the bottom up the colours are: green, yellow, black, red and blue; the same colours that appear in the rings on the Olympic flag. The tradition is applied to all disciplines, including road racing, track racing, cyclo-cross, BMX, Trials and the disciplines within mountain biking. A world champion must wear the jersey when competing in the same discipline, category and speciality for which the title was won. For example, the world road race champion would wear the garment while competing in stage races (except for time trial stages) and one-day races, but would not be entitled to wear it during time trials. Marta Bastianelli (born 30 April 1987) is an Italian professional racing cyclist, who currently rides for UCI Women's Team, UCI Women's WorldTeam . Bastianelli won the 2007 UCI Road World Championships – Women's road race, women's road race at the 2007 UCI Road World Championships ahead of Marianne Vos and Giorgia Bronzini, and also won the equivalent race at the 2018 European Road Cycling Championships, again beating Vos. Yuliya Martisova
Yuliya Viktorovna Martisova (also ''Julia Martisova'', russian: Юлия Викторовна Мартисова; born 15 June 1976 in Velikiye Luki, Pskov Oblast) is a Russian professional road cyclist. She has awarded two Russian championship titles (2005 and 2008) in the women's road race, and later represented her nation Russia at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Martisova currently races for Italy's pro cycling team during the 2013 annual season. Alex Wrubleski
Alexandra "Alex" Wrubleski (born 31 May 1984) is a Canadian retired professional road cyclist. She has awarded three Canadian championship titles in both road race and time trial, and later represented her nation Canada at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Wrubleski also raced for the United States' Webcor Builders Cycling Team, before she took a wide sporting break at the end of 2010 season. Professional career Wrubleski was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, and attended Dr. Martin LeBoldus High School. She made her sporting debut as an amateur rider, when she joined the Canadian cycling team in 2006, and earned two national titles in the women's road race and time trial. Joanne Marie Kiesanowski (born 24 May 1979) is a New Zealand cyclist, who won the silver medal in the women's scratch race at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Diana Žiliūtė
Diana Žiliūtė (; born 28 May 1976 in Rietavas) is a Lithuanian racing cyclist who dominated women's road racing in the late 1990s. She made her debut in the pro cycling ranks in the mid-1990s after winning the 1994 World Junior Road Race Championship. She rose to the top of women's cycling in 1998 when she won two UCI Women's Road World Cup, World Road Cup races, the overall World Road Cup title, and capped the season by winning the World Championship of Road Cycling (women), World Road Race Championships and leading the UCI Women's Road World Rankings. The following year (1999), she further demonstrated her all around prowess by winning the Grande Boucle, one of the hardest stage races in women's cycle racing history. Susanne Ljungskog (born 16 March 1976 in Halmstad) is a Swedish former cyclist. A four-time Olympian (1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008), she won the world road race championship in 2002 and 2003. Beatrix "Trixi" Worrack (born 28 September 1981) is a German former professional road racing cyclist, who rode professionally between 2000 and 2021. The winner of the 2003 German National Road Race Championships, Worrack's career highlights included winning the 2005 Primavera Rosa (the women's Milan–San Remo), capturing the overall title at the 2004 Tour de l'Aude Cycliste Féminin and competing in the women's road race at five Summer Olympic Games between 2004 and 2020.
