2008 Slovenian Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Slovenia on 21 September 2008 to elect the 90 deputies of the National Assembly. 17 parties filed to run in the election, including all nine parliamentary parties. The election was won by the Social Democrats (SD), who then went on to form a government together with Zares, Liberal Democracy of Slovenia (LDS) and the Democratic Party of Pensioners of Slovenia (DeSUS). Opinion polls Exit polls According to exit polls, conducted by the Interstat agency for Radiotelevizija Slovenija, Social Democrats (SD) won the most votes, 32.02%. Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) finished second with 28.04%. Other parties followed: Zares 10.05%, Democratic Party of Pensioners of Slovenia (DeSUS) 6.74%, Slovenian National Party (SNS) 5.58%, Liberal Democracy of Slovenia (LDS) 5.21%, and Slovenian People's Party (SLS) with Youth Party of Slovenia (SMS) 4.28%. National Assembly (Slovenia)
The National Assembly ( sl, Državni zbor Republike Slovenije, or ), is the general representative body of Slovenia. According to the Constitution of Slovenia and the Constitutional Court of Slovenia, it is the major part of the distinctively incompletely bicameral Slovenian Parliament, the legislative branch of the Republic of Slovenia. It has 90 members, elected for a four-year term. 88 members are elected using the party-list proportional representation system and the remaining two, using the Borda count, by the Hungarian and Italian-speaking ethnic minorities, who have an absolute veto in matters concerning their ethnic groups. Patria Case
The Patria case has been the political controversy surrounding claims by prosecutors in Slovenia and Austria of bribery of Slovenian officials by the Finnish company Patria to help clinch an armoured personnel carrier order. There is currently a criminal investigation underway, and two employees of Patria have been arrested on charges of bribery. The CEO stepped down from his position as a result of the affair and is being investigated by the Finnish police on charges of bribery. The Party of Slovenian People (''Stranka slovenskega naroda, SSN'') is an extra-parliamentary party in Slovenia. In the 2008 legislative election in Slovenia, the party won 0.25% of the popular vote and no seats in the National Assembly. The Youth Party – European Greens ( sl, Stranka mladih – Zeleni Evrope, SMS-Zeleni) is a green political party in Slovenia. It is led by Igor Jurišič. Until July 2009, it was called Youth Party of Slovenia (, SMS). Lipa (political Party)
Lipa (Lime Tree) or Party Lime Tree is a nationalist political party in Slovenia. The party takes its name from the leaf of the lime tree, which has traditionally been an emblem favoured by the Slovenes. The party was formed on 1 March 2008 after the Members of Parliament Sašo Peče, Barbara Žgajner Tavš and Boštjan Zagorac decided to quit the Slovenian National Party (SNS), following disagreements within the party. New Slovenia – Christian Democrats ( sl, Nova Slovenija – Krščanski demokrati, NSi) is a Christian-democratic, conservative political party in Slovenia. Since 2018, it is led by Matej Tonin.
