2008 Fresno State Bulldogs Baseball Team
The 2008 Fresno State Bulldogs baseball team represented California State University, Fresno in the NCAA Division I baseball season of 2008. They played their home games at Beiden Field in Fresno, California. The team was coached by Mike Batesole who was in his fifth season at Fresno State. Under Batesole, Fresno State has won three Western Athletic Conference Championships in a row, and he has a 172-134 record with the Bulldogs. In a Cinderella run through the postseason, the Fresno State Bulldogs defeated the Georgia Bulldogs in the 2008 College World Series finals to win its first NCAA Division I Championship in baseball. Mike Batesole
Michael Harold Batesole (born March 28, 1964) is an American former baseball coach. He previously served as coach of the Cal State Northridge Matadors (1996–2002) and the Fresno State Bulldogs (2003–2022). Early life, playing career, and education Born in Anaheim, California, Batesole graduated from Garden Grove High School in 1982 and began his college baseball career at Oral Roberts University. At Oral Roberts, Batesole started at third base from 1983 to 1985 and finished with a .285 batting average, 31 home runs, and 148 runs batted in. From 1985 to 1988, Batesole played minor league baseball in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. In 1990, Batesole completed his bachelor's degree in kinesiology at California State University, Fullerton. He later completed a master's degree in biomechanics from the same university. Matt Curtis
Matthew Aaron Curtis (born August 14, 1974) is an American college baseball coach and former catcher. He played college baseball at Fresno State University from 1993 to 1996 for coach Bob Bennett. He was the head coach of the California State University, Northridge from 2011 to 2033. Playing career Curtis was a four year starting catcher at Fresno State, where he still ranks in the top ten in many categories, including games, hits, at-bats, RBI, and runs. He led the Western Athletic Conference in doubles with 22 in 1995. Selected by the California Angels in the 28th round of the 1996 Major League Baseball Draft, Curtis played professionally from 1996 to 2000 in the California (later Anaheim) Angels and Cleveland Indians organizations, reaching Class-AA in both systems. Thomas Wilkey Mendonca (born April 12, 1988) is an American former professional baseball third baseman. Mendonca won the 2008 College World Series Most Outstanding Player award while a sophomore at Fresno State University. Amateur career Mendonca attended Turlock High School. In 2006, he hit .429 with six home runs. He attended Fresno State University and played college baseball for the Bulldogs. Ryan Edward Overland (born October 25, 1985) is an American baseball coach and former catcher, who is the current head baseball coach of the Fresno State Bulldogs. He played college baseball at Fresno State from 2005 to 2008. Early life and education Overland was born in Atascadero, California, one of two children of Dale and Jean Overland, who both worked as teachers.
