The triple jump, sometimes referred to as the hop, step and jump or the hop, skip and jump, is a track and field event, similar to the long jump. As a group, the two events are referred to as the "horizontal jumps". The competitor runs down the track and performs a hop, a bound and then a jump into the sand pit. The 16th African Championships in Athletics was held in Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia, from April 30 to May 4, 2008. The competition venue was the Addis Ababa Stadium. It is the largest Athletics event held in Ethiopia to date. It was the first time in its then 29-year history the African Championships in Athletics were held in Eastern Africa, despite the region's well-documented success in long-distance running. In the men's 100 m, Nigerians Olusoji Fasuba and Uchenna Emedolu repeated the places from the 2006 edition. On April 30, there was a 35-minute delay to the men's 10,000 metres due to weather, but the Ethiopians dominated the podium and the race, with the missed absence of world champion Kenenisa Bekele. Otonye Iworima
Otonye Iworima (born 13 April 1976) is a Nigerian long jumper and triple jumper. She attended Queens College Lagos for her secondary education and the University of Nsukka for her undergraduate studies, where she gained a degree in Applied Art. She also attended the International Academy of Sport Science and Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland. In 2006, she finished second at the Commonwealth Games and third at the African Championships. For these achievements the Athletics Federation of Nigeria chose her as the Nigerian Female Athlete of the Year.
