2007–2008 Cork Players' Strike
From December 2007 until February 2008, a dispute between the Cork County Board and its Gaelic footballers and hurlers occurred in Ireland. It led to the footballers and hurlers refusing to play for the Cork County Board. The cause of the strike was the issue of deciding who should pick the senior teams' selectors. The players believed the manager should pick the selectors. However, the county board picked the selectors. With the appointment of Teddy Holland as manager, the players also refused to play under his tutorship since he accepted the job during their time of strike. The strike drew comment from the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, and was the first time in the history of the Gaelic Athletic Association that a strike caused inter-county fixtures not to be played. Mark Landers
Mark Landers (born 13 July 1972) is an Irish hurling coach and former hurling, hurler. He is the coach of Cork Senior Hurling Championship, Cork Senior Championship club Bride Rovers GAA, Bride Rovers. Landers played for East Cork club Killeagh GAA, Killeagh and was a member of the Cork senior hurling team for six seasons, during which time he usually lined out at midfield. Landers began his hurling career at club level with Killeagh. He broke onto the club's top adult team as a 15 year-old in 1988 and enjoyed his first success in 1995 when the club won the 1995 Cork Junior Hurling Championship, Cork Junior Championship title. Saipan Incident
The Saipan incident was a public quarrel in May 2002 between Republic of Ireland national football team's captain Roy Keane and manager Mick McCarthy when the team was preparing in Saipan for its matches in Japan in the 2002 FIFA World Cup. It resulted in Keane, a key player, being sent home from the squad. The incident divided public opinion in Ireland regarding who was to blame. Relegated
In sports leagues, promotion and relegation is a process where teams are transferred between multiple divisions based on their performance for the completed season. Leagues that use promotion and relegation systems are often called open leagues. In a system of promotion and relegation, the best-ranked team(s) in the lower division are ''promoted'' to the higher division for the next season, and the worst-ranked team(s) in the higher division are ''relegated'' to the lower division for the next season. National Hurling League
The National Hurling League is an annual Inter county, inter-county hurling competition featuring teams from Ireland and England. Founded in 1925 by the Gaelic Athletic Association, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation within the league system. The league has 35 teams divided into six divisions, with either five or six teams in each division. Promotion and relegation between these divisions is a central feature of the league. Although primarily a competition for Irish teams, teams from England – currently Lancashire GAA, Lancashire, London GAA, London and Warwickshire GAA, Warwickshire – also take part, while in the past New York GAA, New York also fielded a team for the latter stages of the league. Páraic Duffy
Páraic Duffy served as the 18th Director General of the Gaelic Athletic Association. A former chairman of the Monaghan County Board, he replaced Liam Mulvihill in February 2008 and was succeeded by Tom Ryan in April 2018. Paraic was the GAA's player welfare officer from 2006, prior to his appointment as Director General on February 1, 2008. Meath County Football Team
The Meath county football team represents Meath in men's Gaelic football and is governed by Meath GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. Nickey Brennan
Nicholas "Nickey" Brennan (born 3 December 1953) is an Irish former hurler, manager and Gaelic games administrator. He played as a right wing-back at senior level for the Kilkenny county team. More recently, he served as the 35th president of the Gaelic Athletic Association. Brennan joined the team during the 1974 championship and was a regular member of the starting fifteen until his retirement after the 1985 championship. During that time he won two All-Ireland medals, three Leinster medals and two National Hurling League medals. At club level Brennan had a lengthy career with Conahy Shamrocks. The Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT; ga, Institiúid Teicneolaíochta Luimnigh) was an institute of technology, located in Limerick, Ireland.
