2007–08 EIHL Season
The 2007–08 Elite Ice Hockey League season began September 5, 2007 and ran until April 6, 2008. It was the fifth season of Elite League competition. The defending league champions were the Coventry Blaze, who were also the holders of the Challenge Cup. The Nottingham Panthers looked to defend the Play Off Championship they won for the first time in eighteen years in 2007. Movements between Elite League teams Charity Shield The season began on September 5, 2007 with a " Charity Shield" style game between the 2006–07 league champions and Challenge Cup winning Coventry Blaze and the playoff champions Nottingham Panthers at the National Ice Centre. Elite Ice Hockey League
The Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL), sometimes referred to as the British Elite League or, for sponsorship reasons, the Viaplay Elite League, is an ice hockey league in the United Kingdom. Formed in 2003 following the demise of the Ice Hockey Superleague, it is the highest level of ice hockey competition in the United Kingdom. The league operate three competitions for members; the play-offs determine the national champion for the season, following a regular season league competition for which separate champions are also crowned, and which selects and seeds the teams in the play-offs. Finally, a stand-alone cup competition, the Challenge Cup, is also held annually, beginning with the group stages followed by a knock-out format. Russ Cowley
Dr. Russell Cowley (born August 12, 1983) is a Canadian-born British professional ice hockey player currently playing for the Swindon Wildcats. He plays either as a forward or more recently as a defenceman. Playing career Cowley started his career at Swindon Phoenix in 2000 before joining Coventry Blaze in the BNL in 2001. He stayed with the Blaze as they progressed into the EIHL, and was part of the team that won the Grand Slam (league, challenge cup & playoffs) in 2004–05. He signed for rivals Cardiff Devils in 2006 but returned to Coventry the following season, helping the Blaze to another two league titles in 2008 and 2010. Cowley played for the England under-18 and under-20 teams in his junior international career, and played on the Great Britain men's national ice hockey team. IceSheffield
iceSheffield is an ice arena in the Lower Don Valley, Sheffield, England. iceSheffield was completed in May 2003 at a cost of £15 million and is a Centre of Excellence for figure skating, ice dance and hockey, and it is one of only two facilities in the UK that has two Olympic sized ice pads with seating for 1,500 people in pad 1 and 125 in pad 2. Its overall philosophy of use/focus is for the inclusion and activities for all ice sports from community and grass root usage to elite performance. It is now home to most ice hockey teams in Sheffield with the exception being the Sheffield Steelers, who are still based at nearby Sheffield Arena, though the venue has hosted a number of Steelers games in recent seasons. Cardiff Bay Ice Rink
The Cardiff Arena, also known as Cardiff Bay Ice Arena and also known by ice hockey fans as the Big Blue Tent, was a temporary ice rink in Cardiff Bay, Cardiff, Wales. It had a capacity of 2,500 for ice hockey and was home to the Cardiff Devils after leaving the Wales National Ice Rink which was being demolished to make way for a John Lewis store. It was also used for figure skating and hosted three competitions (in February 2009, 2011 and 2012). It was replaced as the home of the Cardiff Devils when they moved into the Ice Arena Wales. Metro Radio Arena
The Utilita Arena Newcastle (formerly the Newcastle Arena, Telewest Arena and Metro Radio Arena) is a large indoor arena in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Edinburgh Capitals
The Edinburgh Capitals are a Scottish ice hockey club, playing in the Scottish National League (SNL). They are based in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh. The team play at the Murrayfield Ice Rink, close to Murrayfield Rugby stadium. In April 2018, a consortium led by David Hand (brother of ex-Racer Tony) won the contract for ice time at Murrayfield, effectively rendering the Capitals homeless. The newly formed Murrayfield Racers applied to join the EIHL and take the Capitals' place but were rejected, plunging the future of top level ice hockey in the city into jeopardy. National Ice Centre
The National Ice Centre (NIC) is located in Nottingham, England. It is situated just east of the city centre, close to the historic Lace Market area. The NIC was the first twin Olympic-sized (60m x 30m) ice pad facility in the UK, "heralding a new era in the development of ice skating". Incorporating the Nottingham Arena (since January 2016 re-branded as the Motorpoint Arena Nottingham), the NIC is a combined live entertainment and leisure venue. The first ice rink (housed within the Arena) was opened on 1 April 2000 by Olympic Gold Medalist, Jayne Torvill. The second Olympic Rink was opened the following year, on 7 April 2001. FA Community Shield
The Football Association Community Shield (formerly the Charity Shield) is English football's annual match contested at Wembley Stadium between the champions of the previous Premier League season and the holders of the FA Cup. If the Premier League champions also won the FA Cup, then the league runners-up provide the opposition. The fixture is recognised as a competitive super cup by The Football Association and UEFA. Organised by the FA, proceeds from the game are distributed to community initiatives and charities around the country. Jeremy Cornish
Jeremy Cornish (born December 7, 1979) is a Canadian professional ice hockey forward who currently coaches Streatham IHC of the NIHL. While he was playing, he was mainly used as an enforcer. Born in London, Ontario, Cornish turned pro in 2000, splitting the year in the ECHL with the Dayton Bombers and in the United Hockey League for the Port Huron Border Cats. He also played for the UHL's Flint Generals and the Central Hockey League for the San Angelo Outlaws, Laredo Bucks and the Memphis Riverkings before moving to the United Kingdom in 2004, joining the Elite League's London Racers. He stayed for a second season, but midway through the 2005-06 season, the Racers folded having been forced to move venues due to safety concerns, stemming from Blaž Emeršič suffering severe facial injuries during a game after being crashed into the boards. Jeff Hutchins
Jeff Hutchins (born April 23, 1978) is a Canadian- British former professional ice hockey left winger who is currently an Associate coach for the Fife Flyers of the Elite Ice Hockey League. Hutchins played in the EIHL for the Coventry Blaze, Belfast Giants, Newcastle Vipers, Edinburgh Capitals, Sheffield Steelers and Dundee Stars. He also played for the Great Britain national ice hockey team. Hutchins was player-coach of the Dundee Stars between 2012 and 2015. Curtis Huppe
Curtis Huppe (born February 21, 1979) is a Canadian former ice hockey forward. Career Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Huppe began his junior career in the Western Hockey League for the Medicine Hat Tigers, Lethbridge Hurricanes and the Tri-City Americans. After a brief spell in the United Hockey League for the Muskegon Fury during their playoff run, Huppe spent the next four seasons in the East Coast Hockey League, where he played for Greenville Grrrowl, Greensboro Generals, Jackson Bandits, Arkansas RiverBlades, Cincinnati Cyclones and the South Carolina Stingrays. In 2004, Huppe joined the Belfast Giants and quickly became a huge fan favourite at the Odyssey Arena. Marc Levers
Marc Levers (born 30 June 1981) is an English professional ice hockey player currently playing for the Nottingham Lions in the National Ice Hockey League. Levers first played for the Panthers during the 2000–01 Ice Hockey Superleague season, playing 15 games. He then had spells with the Isle of Wight Raiders and the Basingstoke Bison before rejoining the Panthers in 2003 who were now playing in the Elite Ice Hockey League which replaced the Superleague and won the Challenge Cup that season.
