2007–08 Doncaster Rovers F.C. Season
During the 2007–08 English football season, Doncaster Rovers F.C. competed in League One. Season summary This was Doncaster's fourth consecutive season in League One. With Adam Brown, Jan Budtz, Liam Green, Rob Pacey, Jon-Paul Pittman, and Sean Thornton released, several new players were brought in for the beginning of the season. James Hayter was bought from Bournemouth, Gordon Greer came from Kilmarnock, free agents Sam Hird and Neil Sullivan came from Leeds, Richie Wellens from Oldham, Martin Woods from Rotherham, and Matt Mills was loaned from Manchester City. Rovers were in 4th place by the New Year, and by the last game of the season they were in 2nd place but needed a win at Cheltenham to guarantee promotion to the Championship. Cheltenham won, as did 3rd placed Nottingham Forest, so Doncaster had to compete in the play-offs. Doncaster Rovers F
Doncaster (, ) is a city in South Yorkshire, England. Named after the River Don, it is the administrative centre of the larger City of Doncaster. It is the second largest settlement in South Yorkshire after Sheffield. Doncaster is situated in the Don Valley on the western edge of the Humberhead Levels and east of the Pennines. At the 2021 census, the city had a population of 308,100, while its built-up area had a population of 158,141 at the 2011 census. Martin Woods
Martin Paul Woods (born 1 January 1986) is a Scottish footballer who plays as a midfielder for club Boston United. Woods career started at Leeds United and during his time there had a spell on loan at Hartlepool United. He then moved on to Sunderland, Rotherham United and Doncaster Rovers, and also spent time on loan at Yeovil Town. Following a short spell at Barnsley, Woods signed for Ross County in October 2014. He had two spells with County, interrupted by a year at Shrewsbury Town. Woods signed for Partick Thistle in October 2017, then joined Dundee in November 2018. Richie Wellens
Richard Paul Wellens (born 26 March 1980) is an English professional football manager and former player who played as a midfielder. He is currently head coach of EFL League Two club Leyton Orient. Wellens began his career at Manchester United before signing for Blackpool in 2000, where he went on to win promotion from League Two via the playoffs in 2001. In 2005, he left to join Oldham Athletic, where he made 87 appearances in two seasons at the club, before moving to Doncaster in 2007, becoming an instant fans' favourite by helping get the club promoted to the Championship for the first time in 50 years. After helping the club stay in the division, he moved to Leicester City, and during his time he won the club's Player of the Year in 2011. Neil Sullivan
Neil Sullivan (born 24 February 1970) is a professional football player and coach. He played as a goalkeeper from 1988 until 2013, playing in the Premier League for Wimbledon, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, and represented Scotland internationally. He started his career with Wimbledon, and remained with The Dons for twelve years during which he made 181 league appearances. He also at times covered for the likes of Dave Beasant, Hans Segers and Paul Heald, and also spent a period on loan at Crystal Palace. In 2000, he moved to Tottenham Hotspur where he replaced Ian Walker as the club's favoured keeper. Sam Hird
Adrian Samuel Hird (born 7 September 1987) is an English football coach and former professional footballer who is first team coach at EFL League One side Bolton Wanderers. As a player he was central defender or defensive midfielder and notably had lengthy spells with both Doncaster Rovers and Chesterfield. He also played for Grimsby Town, Alfreton Town and Barrow. Gordon Greer (born 14 December 1980) is a Scottish former professional footballer who played as a defender. Greer played for Clyde, Blackburn Rovers (two spells), Stockport County, Kilmarnock (two spells), Doncaster Rovers, Swindon Town and Brighton & Hove Albion during his career. He also played in 11 full international matches for Scotland between 2013 and 2016. Club career Greer was born in Glasgow and after a single season with Port Glasgow Juniors, began his professional career with Clyde, where he played in only 33 matches before securing a £250,000 move to English Premiership club Blackburn Rovers. Sean Thornton
Sean Thornton (born 18 May 1983) is a former professional footballer. He made 11 appearances in the Premier League for Sunderland in the 2002–03 season and has made over 200 appearances in the Football League, mostly for Sunderland, Doncaster Rovers and Leyton Orient. Club career Tranmere Rovers Thornton began his career with Football League Second Division club Tranmere Rovers in 2001, for whom he made 13 appearances in the 2001–02 season, scoring once against Wigan Athletic. Jon-Paul Pittman
Jon-Paul Pittman (born 24 October 1986) is a football coach and former professional player, currently Assistant Under 18 Coach at Brentford. Pittman began his career in Aston Villa's academy before moving to Nottingham Forest where he spent eight years. This also included two loan spells at Hartlepool United and Bury respectively. Following a short spell at Doncaster Rovers, he moved to Crawley Town. A five-figure move to Wycombe Wanderers followed a season and a half later. He then joined Oxford United and after a short return on loan to Crawley Town made a return to Wycombe. A move to Grimsby Town in 2014 lasted two seasons before signing for Harrogate Town in 2016. Pittman’s final playing club was Torquay United in 2017. A career ending knee injury meant Pittman announced his retirement aged 31. Liam Green
Liam Thomas Green (born 17 March 1988) is an English footballer. Green made two substitute appearances in League One for Doncaster Rovers, before being released in May 2007. He signed for Boston United in July 2007. He made 69 appearances in all competitions for the Pilgrims (scoring once). He then signed for Ilkeston Town, making 38 appearances in all competitions. When Ilkeston Town were liquidated he joined Corby Town, where he made five appearances.
