Events January *7 January – Death of television presenter Magnus Magnusson, long-time presenter of the BBC's '' Mastermind''. * 8 January – STV launches separate news services for the East and West of the STV Central region, initially as a five-minute opt out within the 6:00 pm edition of '' Scotland Today'' on weeknights. Television In Scotland
Television in Scotland mostly consists of UK-wide broadcasts, with regional variations at different times which are specific to Scotland. The BBC and ITV networks both began broadcasting in the country during the 1950s. There were further expansions in the early 1960s with the arrival of Grampian, Border and BBC2 television. The experience of commercial expansion of television services in Scotland since has been broadly similar to that in the UK generally. Terrestrial television is available through DTT platform Freeview along with various other channels. Cable services are available to limited parts of the country with Virgin Media, satellite television is provided by Sky and IPTV services are available with BT TV and TalkTalk TV. Scottish National Party
The Scottish National Party (SNP; sco, Scots National Pairty, gd, Pàrtaidh Nàiseanta na h-Alba ) is a Scottish nationalist and social democratic political party in Scotland. The SNP supports and campaigns for Scottish independence from the United Kingdom and for membership of the European Union, with a platform based on civic nationalism. Scotsport
''Scotsport'' is a Scottish sports television programme, broadcast on STV in northern and central Scotland between 1957 and 2008, as well as on ITV Border in southern Scotland. It was first broadcast in 1957 as ''Sports Desk'' and continuing until the end of its football highlights show in May 2008. As such, the programme was officially recognised as the world's longest-running sports television programme; however, it has since been overtaken by ''Hockey Night in Canada''. History Launching less than a month after the opening of Scottish Television, the programme first aired on 18 September 1957, as ''Sports Desk''. The ''Scotsport'' title was adopted a short time later, and the vast majority of its coverage was of football, rather than sport in general, as the name might imply. Daybreak Scotland
''Daybreak Scotland'' (previously ''GMTV Scotland'') was the regional news broadcaster for the two ITV regions in northern and central Scotland, provided for the ITV breakfast station ITV Breakfast. The bulletins were produced for '' Daybreak'' (previously ''GMTV'') by Macmillan Media, and were broadcast from studios in Glasgow. Before 3 December 2007, the regional news opt outs during ''GMTV'' were provided by the ITV franchise holders in central and northern Scotland, STV Central and STV North respectively. However, in 2007, the contract for providing the regional news was awarded to Macmillan Media. Macmillan Media also produced ''Daybreak Northern Ireland'' news for broadcast in Northern Ireland. Meanwhile, the regional news for the ITV regions in England and Wales and the Channel Islands are produced by the corresponding ITV plc regions. GMTV
GMTV (an acronym for Good Morning Television), now legally known as ITV Breakfast Broadcasting Limited, was the name of the national Channel 3 breakfast television contractor/licensee, broadcasting in the United Kingdom from 1 January 1993 to 3 September 2010. It became a wholly owned subsidiary of ITV plc in November 2009.ITV buys remaining 25 pct stake in GMTV Reuters report on Interactive Investor, 26 November 2009 Shortly after, ITV plc announced the programme would end. BBC Pacific Quay
BBC Pacific Quay is BBC Scotland's television and radio studio complex at Pacific Quay, Glasgow, Scotland. Opened by then Prime Minister Gordon Brown on 20 September 2007, the studios are home to BBC Scotland's television, radio and online services and the headquarters of the BBC in Scotland. Location The studios are located adjacent to the Glasgow Science Centre, across the river from the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre and adjacent to the studios of commercial broadcaster STV. The new building is one of the most modern digital broadcasting facilities in the world, complete with the BBC's first HD-capable newsroom. Functioning Television studio facilities based at BBC Pacific Quay were rebranded as "Street @ BBC Scotland" in 2018. STV Central
Scottish Television (now, legally, known as STV Central Limited) is the ITV (TV network), ITV network franchisee for Central Belt, Central Scotland. The channel — the largest of the three ITV franchises in Scotland — has been in operation since 31 August 1957 and is the second-oldest franchise holder in the UK that is still active (the oldest being ITV Granada, Granada Television). STV Central broadcasts from studios at Pacific Quay in Glasgow and is owned and operated by STV Group (formerly SMG plc), which also owns the Northern Scotland franchise, Grampian Television (now STV North), based in Aberdeen. Scottish Broadcasting Commission
The Scottish Broadcasting Commission ( gd, Coisisean craolaidh na h-Alba, sco, Scots Braidcastin Commeesion) was established by the Scottish Government in August 2007. Its purpose is to conduct an independent investigation into television production and broadcasting in Scotland, and to define a strategic way forward for the industry. All commissioners are to be unpaid. Members The commission is to be chaired by Blair Jenkins, former Head of News and Current Affairs at BBC Scotland and former Director of Broadcasting at STV. BBC Scotland
BBC Scotland (Scottish Gaelic: ''BBC Alba'') is a division of the BBC and the main public broadcaster in Scotland. It is one of the four BBC national regions, together with the BBC English Regions, BBC Cymru Wales and BBC Northern Ireland. Its headquarters are in Glasgow, it employs approximately 1,250 staff as of 2017, to produce 15,000 hours of television and radio programming per year.
