The discus throw (), also known as disc throw, is a track and field event in which an athlete throws a heavy disk (mathematics), disc—called a discus—in an attempt to mark a farther distance than their competitors. It is an classical antiquity, ancient sport, as demonstrated by the fifth-century-BC Myron statue ''Discobolus''. Although not part of the current pentathlon, it was one of the events of the Ancient Olympic pentathlon, ancient Greek pentathlon, which can be dated back to at least 708 BC, and it is part of the modern decathlon. History The sport of throwing the discus traces back to it being an event in the Ancient Olympic Games, original Olympic Games of Ancient Greece. The 2004 Asian Junior Champion, he won a gold medal at the 2004 World Junior Championships In Grosseto, the inaugural Iranian to win a medal at any global athletics competition. Omar Ahmed El Ghazaly
Omar Ahmed El Ghazaly (born 9 February 1984 in Cairo) is an Egyptian discus thrower. He originally played handball, while his siblings were on the Egyptian national swimming team. In 1999 he was recruited by former African shot put champion Nagui Asaad, who was setting up a throwing school that also included hammer thrower Mohsen El Anany and shot putter Yasser Fathy. After having a try with the different implements, he settled for the discus and rapidly made his debut in the national team. In 2000, aged 16, he was selected for the Egyptian team for the World Junior Championships, where he finished in 17th. That year he also won the Arab Championships with a throw of 53.07 m. At the 2002 World Junior Championships, a poor result of 10th was due to a shoulder injury. In 2003, his final year as a junior, he set a new junior world record of 65.88. Aleksander Tammert (born 2 February 1973) is an Estonian discus thrower. Athletics career Tammert competed at the 2004 Olympics and originally finishing fourth, but as gold medal winner Róbert Fazekas was disqualified, Tammert received the bronze medal. A month later he placed third at the World Athletics Final. In 2005 Tammert placed fourth at both the World Championships and the World Athletics Final. Ercüment Olgundeniz (born July 7, 1976 in Izmir) is a Turkish track and field athlete competing in the discus and occasionally shot put. The tall athlete at is a member of Enkaspor, where he is coached by Teodoru Agachi. He took part at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. With his throw of 58.17 m, Olgundeniz ranked 28th and could not qualify for the finals.
