2007 South Lanarkshire Council Election
Elections to South Lanarkshire Council took place on 3 May 2007 on the same day as the 31 other Scottish local government elections. The election was the first to use the 20 new wards created as a result of the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, each ward electing three or four councillors using the single transferable vote system form of proportional representation. The new wards replaced the 67 single-member wards which used the plurality (first past the post) system of election. Labour retained their position as the largest party on the council but were no longer in overall control after the introduction of proportional voting saw them lose 22 seats. The Scottish National Party (SNP) recorded their best result in a South Lanarkshire election as they gained 17 seats to remain the second-largest party. Avondale And Stonehouse (ward)
Avondale and Stonehouse is one of the twenty wards used to elect members of the South Lanarkshire Council. Created in 2007, it elects three councillors. Its territory covers the small towns of Strathaven and Stonehouse, the villages of Chapelton and Glassford and a rural hinterland to the west up to the local authority borders with East Ayrshire and East Renfrewshire – a 2017 national boundary review removed a corridor of farmland between the White Cart Water and southern East Kilbride where housebuilding was planned (although the nearby Benthall Farm development was not re-assigned at that time, still falling just within Avondale and Stonehouse despite being an extension of the Lindsayfield suburb). This review also caused the loss of one seat from the original four despite the electorate increasing slightly, to balance with other wards with similar populations but only three seats. Lesmahagow (ward)
Lesmahagow ( ; sco, Lismahagie or ''Lesmahagae'', gd, Lios MoChuda) is a small town in the historic county of Lanarkshire on the edge of moorland, near Lanark in the central belt of Scotland. Lesmahagow was also a civil parish. It lies west of the M74, and southeast of Kirkmuirhill. It is also known as Abbey Green or the Gow. Etymology The name means "Enclosure (meaning a walled area, like a monastery or fort) of St Machutus". The saint was born in Wales and may originally have been known as ''"Mahagw"'' prior to emigrating to Brittany where he became known by the Latinised form of the name and also as "St Malo". It is also possible that the first syllable may mean "garden" rather than "monastery", although Mac an Tailleir (2003) believes the former was altered from the latter in Gaelic. Clydesdale South is one of the twenty wards used to elect members of the South Lanarkshire Council. It elects three councillors. Its territory covers a primarily rural area in western Clydesdale bisected by the M74 motorway; the largest settlements are Blackwood/Kirkmuirhill and Lesmahagow, also including villages such as Coalburn, Douglas and Rigside – these boundaries were unaffected by a 2017 national review. Clydesdale East is one of the twenty wards used to elect members of the South Lanarkshire Council. It elects three councillors. Its territory covers a large, rural and sparsely populated area of southern and eastern Clydesdale, bordering four other local authority areas ( Dumfries and Galloway, the Scottish Borders and short sections with West Lothian and East Ayrshire). Lanark South (ward)
Lanark South was a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1917. It was located in the province of Ontario. It was created by the British North America Act of 1867 which divided the County of Lanark into two ridings: Lanark South and Lanark North. In 1882, the South Riding of Lanark was defined as consisting of the townships of Bathurst, North Elmsley, Beckwith, South Sherbrooke, North Burgess, Drummond and Montague, the Town of Perth, and the Village of Carleton Place. In 1903, the Town of Smith's Falls was added to the riding, and the Village of Carleton Place was excluded. The electoral district was abolished in 1914 when it was merged into Lanark riding.
