Northampton Borough Council
Northampton Borough Council was the borough council and non-metropolitan district responsible for local government in the large town of Northampton in England. In 2021 the council was abolished and succeeded by West Northamptonshire Council; a unitary authority, and the Northampton Town Council, a parish council. The leader and cabinet model of decision-making had been adopted by the council. It consisted of 45 councillors, representing 33 wards in the town, overseen by a mayor, leader and cabinet. The main council building was Northampton Guildhall. History Northampton was granted its first town charter in 1189 by King Richard I and was permitted the appointment of a mayor in 1215 by King John. Northampton first existed as an ancient borough in medieval Britain before being one of the 178 boroughs to be reformed under the Municipal Corporations Act in 1835. The Liberal Democrats (commonly referred to as the Lib Dems) are a liberal political party in the United Kingdom. Northampton () is a market town and civil parish in the East Midlands of England, on the River Nene, north-west of London and south-east of Birmingham. Tony Clarke (English Politician)
Anthony Richard Clarke (born 6 September 1963, Northampton, England), known as Tony Clarke is a British former Member of Parliament, who is currently a teacher at Northampton College. A politician of the left, Clarke was until was until recently the Green Party National Spokesperson on International and Foreign Affairs; previously a British Labour Party politician, he was Member of Parliament for Northampton South from 1997 to 2005. Clarke was also a director of Northampton Town F.C. for 11 years from 1999 to 2010, and served as General Manager at the club between 2005 and 2008. He served three terms (12 years) on Northampton Borough Council (2 Labour, 1 Independent) and one term (4 years) on Northamptonshire County Council (Independent). He also served as a Special Constable with Northamptonshire Police between 2003 and 2007. 2007 English Local Elections
The 2007 UK local government elections were held on 3 May 2007. These elections took place in most of England and all of Scotland. There were no local government elections in Wales though the Welsh Assembly had a general election on the same day. There were no local government elections in Northern Ireland. Just over half of English councils and almost all the Scottish councils began the counts on Friday, rather than Thursday night, because of more complex arrangements regarding postal votes. These elections were a landmark in the United Kingdom as it was the first time that 18- to 20-year-olds could stand as candidates for council seats. The change was due to an alteration of the Electoral Administration Act. At least fourteen 18- to 20-year-olds are known to have stood as candidates for council seats and as a result William Lloyd became the youngest person to be elected to official office in Britain. Northampton Borough Council Elections
Northampton Borough Council was the local authority for Northampton in Northamptonshire, England and was elected every four years. From the last boundary changes in 1999, 47 councillors were elected from 23 wards. The borough council was abolished in 2021, with the area becoming part of West Northamptonshire.
