2007 IAFL Season
The 2007 IAFL (Irish American Football League) season, with new divisional format, was due to begin on March 4 with the College Championship game between DCU Saints and UL Vikings, but the game was delayed due to rain, so the season proper began on March 25 when the Cork Admirals beat the Belfast Bulls, the UL Vikings beat the Tallaght Outlaws and Dublin Rebels beat the Dublin City University Saints. The season continued throughout April and May, with the IAFL College Championship Game eventually been rescheduled on June 3, with the UL Vikings beating the DCU Saints 50–2. During the course of the regular season, two non-league games were played against foreign opposition, with CMS College Stags beating the Tallaght Outlaws 67–0 and, in the Claddagh Classic on June 2, the Team USA All-Stars beat the Carrickfergus Knights 26–0. Irish American Football League
American Football Ireland (AFI) is the National Governing Body for American football for Ireland and Northern Ireland. Founded in 1984 the AFI is entirely volunteer run and all American football played in Ireland is played at an amateur level. History 1980s and 1990s The first Shamrock Bowl game was played in 1986 between the Craigavon Cowboys and the Dublin Celts. The Cowboys won the first title played in Dublin. The Celts then went on to be the number 1 team in Ireland for the next 10 years, winning the Shamrock Bowl 5 times. The Celts were also the First Irish team to represent Ireland in the Euro Bowl – the then Champions league of European American Football. 2000s During 2000, plans were made to resurrect the IAFL. Cork Admirals
The Cork Admirals are an American Football team that play in the Irish American Football League (IAFL). The team is based in Presentation Brothers College, Cork, Presentation Brothers College Sports Ground, Cork (city), Cork. The team was formed in 2001, playing along with 4 other teams that year. The Admirals became one of the best teams in the IAFL, appearing in the playoffs semifinals numerous times. The teams also held a reputation for a lot of records in the IAFL mostly in points in a game and rushing. History The Admirals first game was in December 2002. In a rain soaked game the Admirals lost 28–18 to the Dublin Rebels in an 8-a-side challenge match. Despite the loss the performance held encouraging signs for the team, and increased enthusiasm in the club. The team stepped up to 11-a-side for the next two friendly matches. Belfast Bulls
The Belfast Bulls were an American football team based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Overview Coached by HC Buttermilk Thompson, the team was founded in 2002. The Belfast Bulls were formed late in 2002 by Chris Mitchell but in 2007 the team was led by the combined experience of Head Coach Rod Thompson, Defensive Coaches Mark Helferty and Marty McKeever, Offensive Coaches Paul Orr and John Savage. Momentum was built as the Bulls won their first four matches and established the club as a legitimate future contender for the Shamrock Bowl title - the biggest prize in the IAFL. Although playing 8-a-side rules for the first season, it was clear that their talent and drive were a great base to improve on and achieve playing in the 11-a-side league. UL Vikings
The University of Limerick Vikings are the American football team from the University of Limerick in Limerick, Ireland. The team currently competes in the American Football Ireland Division One. The Vikings have won three IAFL Shamrock Bowl titles – in 2007, 2008 and 2009 and the Atlantic Cup in 2010. The Vikings' all-time record is 54–30–4 (0.580). History 1999–2006 Established in 1999, the team played mostly flag football until late 2001, when they joined the IAFL winter league. In UL's first-ever game, they took the field on the road to the eventual Shamrock Bowl champion Dublin Rebels and were beaten 48–0. Tallaght Outlaws
The Tallaght Outlaws were an American football located in Tallaght, Ireland. Dublin Rebels
The Dublin Rebels are the most successful team in the history of the Irish American Football League. They have earned nine national championship wins (Shamrock Bowl XV, XVII, XVIII, XIX, XX, XXIV, XXV, XXX, XXXI), four league titles, three European crowns, and have registered an undefeated season twice; once in 2006 and again in 2010. Most recently, The Rebels posted an undefeated regular season, losing in the Shamrock Bowl, to UCD History 1995 season The Rebels were founded by Philip Woodyard, Marcus Naylor and Andrew Flynn in 1995. DCU Saints (American Football)
The Dublin City University Saints was a former American football team of Dublin City University, Ireland. Established in 2005, the DCU Saints initially competed in the Irish American Football League (IAFL) for five seasons, reaching the playoffs in 2008 and 2009. The team collapsed following the conclusion of the league's 2010 season, before attempting to unsuccessfully reform for the 2013 season. Colours The DCU Saints followed a similar colour scheme to other DCU clubs: royal blue and gold. The team had both home and away strips: the home being navy blue and gold; the away white and gold. IAFL College Championship Game
The IAFL College Bowl was a college football tournament that formed part of the Irish American Football League between 2007 and 2011. Four teams competed in the championship since its inauguration: the UL Vikings, the DCU Saints, Trinity College, and UCD. The final champions were Trinity College, having defeating UCD 7-0 in December 2011. The Bowl was discontinued after the 2011 edition as all four collegiate members of the league now compete in the South division of the Shamrock Bowl Conference. Claddagh Classic
Claddagh () is an area close to the centre of Galway city, where the River Corrib meets Galway Bay. It was formerly a fishing village, just outside the old city walls. It is just across the river from the Spanish Arch, which was the location of regular fish markets where the locals supplied the city with seafood as recently as the end of the 19th century. People have been gathering seafood and fishing from the area for millennia. It is one of the oldest former fishing villages in Ireland - its existence having been recorded since the arrival of Christianity in the 5th century. During the 19th century the Claddagh attracted many visitors, including writers who spread its fame. The original village of thatched cottages was razed in the 1930s and replaced by a council-housing scheme. Belfast Trojans
The Belfast Trojans are an American Football team formed in January 2006, and have competed in the Irish American Football League, IAFL since 2007 playing NCAA rules in full contact. The Belfast Trojans are the current national champions, after winning Shamrock Bowl XXXIII. The team currently train and play their home matches at Belfast Harlequins Club located at Deramore Park.
