2007 CIS Football Season
The 2007 CIS football season began on August 31, 2007, and concluded with the 43rd Vanier Cup national championship on November 23 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, with the Manitoba Bisons winning their third championship. Twenty-seven universities across Canada competed in CIS football this season, the highest level of amateur play in Canadian football, under the auspices of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). Schedule 2007 marked the first year that the Vanier Cup and Grey Cup were played on the same weekend where they both took place in Toronto's Rogers Centre as part of the 95th Grey Cup celebrations. Dating back to 1973, previous Vanier Cups had always been played the week following the Grey Cup. Hardy Trophy
The Hardy Trophy is a Canadian sport trophy, presented annually to the winner of the Canada West Universities Athletic Association Football Conference of U Sports, the country's governing body for university athletics. It is named for Evan Hardy, the former head of the agricultural engineering department at the University of Saskatchewan, who had played for the Huskies for its first five years before a rule that only students could play. Hardy continued on as coach and created a western university league. The original trophy was replaced in 1997 after it fell apart during an on-field celebration of the Huskies win in 1996 at home at Griffiths Stadium. The original Hardy trophy was unearthed beneath a pile of storage boxes in 2008 at the University of Saskatchewan. Michael Giffin
Michael Giffin (born January 24, 1984 in Kingston, Ontario) is a retired professional Canadian football running back who most recently played for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. He was signed as a free agent by the Alouettes, originally late in 2008. Jamall Lee
Jamall Lee (born March 13, 1987) is a former professional Canadian football running back who played for three seasons for the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League. He was signed by the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League as an undrafted free agent in 2009 and released at the end of the pre-season, making him an NFL free agent. He was drafted by the BC Lions third overall in the 2009 CFL Draft. He played CIS football for the Bishop's Gaiters. Early years Lee was born in New Westminster, British Columbia. Peter Gorman Trophy
The Peter Gorman Trophy is awarded to the Rookie of the Year in U Sports Football. The Trophy acknowledges the great contribution Peter Gorman has made to the development of Canadian University Football. As founder of the Canadian College Bowl, his emphasis has always been on the youth of Canada, and is therefore associated with the award to encourage U Sports rookies. Scott Evans (Canadian Football)
Scott Evans (born December 15, 1983) is a former professional Canadian football offensive tackle. He also played CIS Football at Wilfrid Laurier. Evans first signed with the Toronto Argonauts as an undrafted free agent in 2007 and attended training camp, but returned to school after its conclusion. Presidents' Trophy (CIS)
The Presidents' Trophy is an annual Canadian sports award presented to the most outstanding defensive player in U Sports football. The trophy was first presented in 1980 after having been championed by two past presidents of Canadian university sports bodies. The name indirectly honours Ed Zemrau, past president of U Sports (then known as the Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union); and Robert Doty, past president of Canada's university football championship game, then known as the College Bowl and now as the Vanier Cup. Erik Glavic
Erik Glavic is a former Canadian football quarterback who played CIS football for both the Calgary Dinos and the Saint Mary's Huskies. Glavic is the only CIS football player to have won the Hec Crighton Trophy with two different teams. His brother Sasha Glavic is a former defensive back for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. University career Glavic was named starting quarterback in his third season with the Huskies, after being used the previous year mainly for short yardage situations. Glavic had a great year with 1,843 passing yards, and 478 rushing yards. Glavic's main asset is his ability to scramble as he added 5 rushing touchdowns to his 16 passing. In the 2007 Uteck Bowl Glavic passed for 102 yards and one touchdown, while adding 41 yards and one touchdown rushing. Glavic left the game early with an injured knee. Hec Crighton Trophy
The Hec Crighton Trophy (sometimes referred to as the Hec Crighton Award) is awarded annually to the most outstanding Canadian football player in U Sports. The trophy is named after the late Hec Crighton - teacher, coach, referee, and author of the Official Football Rule Book and the U Sports Rule Book. It was first presented in 1967 by the board of directors of the Canadian College Bowl. It is the Canadian equivalent to the American NCAA Heisman Trophy. The Western Mustangs program has produced the most Hec Crighton winners with seven as well as the most individual winners with six ( Tim Tindale won the award twice). Chris Flynn has won the Hec Crighton Trophy three times, consecutively, while no other player has won the award more than twice. 95th Grey Cup
The 95th Grey Cup was held in Toronto at the Rogers Centre on November 25, 2007. The Grey Cup, first awarded in 1909, is the championship game of the Canadian Football League. It was played between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, with the Roughriders winning 23–19. It was the first Grey Cup meeting between the two teams, and was also the first time any Labour Day Classic matchup has reoccurred in the Grey Cup. Canadian Interuniversity Sport
U Sports (stylized as U SPORTS) is the national sport governing body of university sport in Canada, comprising the majority of degree-granting universities in the country. Its equivalent body for organized sports at colleges in Canada is the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Some institutions are members of both bodies for different sports.
