2006–07 Úrvalsdeild Kvenna (basketball)
The 2006–2007 Úrvalsdeild kvenna was the 49th season of the Úrvalsdeild kvenna, the top-tier women's basketball league in Iceland. The season started on October 21, 2006 and ended on April 14, 2007. Haukar won its first title by defeating Keflavík 3–1 in the Finals. Competition format The participating teams first played a conventional round-robin schedule with every team playing each opponent twice "home" and twice "away" for a total of 20 games. The top four teams qualified for the championship playoffs whilst the bottom team was relegated to Division I. Úrvalsdeild kvenna; English: Women's Premier League, known as Subway deild kvenna for sponsorship reasons, is the highest basketball competition among women's clubs in Iceland. It is administrated by the Icelandic Basketball Federation. It was founded in 1952 and, until 2007, it was known as 1. deild kvenna (English: Women's First division). Haukar Women's Basketball
The Haukar women's basketball team, commonly known as Haukar, is the women's basketball department of Knattspyrnufélagið Haukar multi-sport club, based in the town of Hafnarfjörður, Iceland. Recent history On 23 September 2021, Haukar became the first Icelandic women's basketball team to win in a continental competition when it defeated Clube União Sportiva, 81–76, in the first leg of the 2021–22 EuroCup Women qualifiers. In the game, Jana Falsdóttir became the youngest Icelandic female player to play and score in a continental competition, breaking the records of Unnur Tara Jónsdóttir and Ragna Margrét Brynjarsdóttir. Keflavík Women's Basketball
The Keflavík women's basketball team, commonly known as Keflavík, is the women's basketball department of Keflavík ÍF (Keflavík, íþrótta- og ungmennafélag), based in the town of Reykjanesbær in Iceland. It is Iceland's most successful women's basketball team with 16 national championship. They currently play in Úrvalsdeild kvenna where they won the national championship in 2017. Grindavík Women's Basketball
The Grindavík women's basketball team, commonly known as Grindavík or UMFG for short, is the women's basketball department of Ungmennafélag Grindavíkur multi-sport club, based in the town of Grindavík in Iceland. It won the national championship in 1997 and the Icelandic Basketball Cup in 2008 and 2015. Recent history In April 2019, Grindavík defeated 1. deild kvenna champions Fjölnir, 3-0, in the promotion playoffs for a seat in the Úrvalsdeild. With the worst record in the league, the team was relegated from the Úrvalsdeild in March 2020 after the final games of the season and the playoffs were canceled due to the Coronavirus pandemic in Iceland. In 2021, Grindavík defeated 1. deild kvenna champions Njarðvík, 3-2, in the promotion playoffs finals. Breiðablik Women's Basketball
The Breiðablik women's basketball team, commonly known as Breiðablik, is the women's basketball department of the Breiðablik multi-sport club. It is based in Kópavogur, Iceland. As of 2018–2019 season its plays in the Icelandic top-tier Úrvalsdeild kvenna. History During their first season in the Úrvaldeild in 1994–95, Breiðablik won the national championship after beating Keflavík in the finals. In 2017 the club won promotion from 1. deild kvenna to the Úrvalsdeild. In 2019, Breiðablik finished last in the league but was speared from relegation as Stjarnan withdrew its team from the Úrvalsdeild. Helena Sverrisdóttir (born 11 March 1988) is an Icelandic former basketball player. Generally considered the greatest Icelandic female basketball player of all time, she was named the Icelandic Basketball Player of the Year, Icelandic Women's Basketball Player of the Year 12 times. During her playing career, she won the Icelandic championship five times and the Slovak Women's Basketball Extraliga, Slovak championship two times. Helena played college basketball for TCU Horned Frogs women's basketball, TCU where she was named the Mountain West Conference women's basketball tournament, Mountain West Conference Player of the Year in 2010. Tamara Bowie (born June 3, 1981) is an American former professional basketball player. In 2007, she was named the Úrvalsdeild kvenna Foreign Player of the Year after leading the league in scoring and rebounds. She played professionally in Iceland, Latvia, Israel, Greece and Bulgaria, where she won the national championship in 2011. College career Bowie played college basketball for the Ball State Cardinals from 1999 to 2003.
