2006 Seychellois Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in the Seychelles between 28 and 30 July 2006. Incumbent president James Michel of the Seychelles People's Progressive Front was re-elected with 54% of the vote. Candidates Three candidates participated in the election. *James Michel – Incumbent president and candidate of the ruling Seychelles People's Progressive Front (SPPF) party. He took over as president after long-time President France-Albert René, who won the last presidential election in 2001, stepped down in July 2004. His running mate was Joseph Belmont. *Wavel Ramkalawan – Candidate of the main opposition Seychelles National Party (SNP). He finished second to René in the 1998 and 2001. James Michel
James Alix Michel, GCSK (born August 16, 1944) is a Seychellois politician and the former President of Seychelles from year 2004 to 2016. He previously served as Vice-President under his predecessor, France-Albert René, from 1996 to 2004. Michel was initially a teacher, but later he became involved in the archipelago's booming tourism industry and joined René's political party before independence in 1976. Life and career Michel followed President René through different political posts during all periods of the Seychelles' history as an independent entity. Annette Mary Solange Georges (born 1957) is a lawyer, Seychellois politician and the first leader of the Seychelles United Opposition Party. Biography Annette Georges was born in Seychelles in 1957. She grew up in a family that was already involved in the politics of her country. Her father was a minister and a member of the Seychelles National Assembly on the ticket of Seychelles Democratic Party (SDP) that later metamorphosed into the SDP-SPUD after forming a coalition with the Seychelles People's Unity Party (SPUP). She studied law in the United Kingdom and was called to the bar in 1980. Her first job upon return from the United Kingdom was a position in the office of the Attorney General.
