Saanich Commonwealth Place
Saanich Commonwealth Place is a recreation center located west of the Patricia Bay Highway and north of Royal Oak Drive in Saanich, British Columbia in Canada. It was originally constructed in 1993 for the August 1994 Commonwealth Games, and is currently a prominent facility in the community. In 2002 the original weightroom was completely renovated and it re-opened for operation in 2004. Among the center's other features are a full-size gymnasium (7000 square feet), a 50-meter competition pool, 4.5 meter deep dive tank with 1-, 3-, 5-, 7.5-, and 10-meter boards, and the Bruce Hutchison Branch of the Greater Victoria Public Library. The building's construction is unique; it features a red dome in the shape of a slightly flattened square pyramid over the main pool area. Charles Bowne "Chip" Peterson (born December 3, 1987) is an American competition swimming (sport), swimmer who specializes in long-distance freestyle swimming, especially open water swimming, in which he is a world champion. Career At the 2005 World Aquatics Championships, Peterson won gold in the 10 km event and a silver medal position behind Germany's Thomas Lurz in the 5-kilometer event. Peterson was jointly awarded the inaugural Swimming World Swimmers of the Year, Open Water Swimmer of the Year by ''Swimming World magazine'' with Lurz. Peterson also earned a gold medal in the 1500 meter Freestyle swimming, freestyle at the 2005 Summer Nationals in Irvine, California. Kier Maitland (born November 16, 1988, in Edmonton, Alberta) is a male swimming (sport), swimmer from Canada, who mostly competes in the distance freestyle events. Maitland is the son of Craig and Karen Maitland and has an older brother named Logan. Club swimming career Kier currently swims for the Edmonton Keyano Swim Club in Edmonton, Alberta during the summer under the coach Steve Price. Kier earned rookie of the year award at the 2005 World Aquatic Trials. The next year he qualified for his first senior national team and earned himself a spot on the 2006 Pan Pacific Games team for Canada. Trent Grimsey
Trent Grimsey (born 4 May 1988) is an Australian retired long distance swimmer who set a new record time for crossing the English Channel in 2012. He won the silver medal in the 25 kilometre open water at the 2009 World Aquatics Championships in Rome. He also finished 8th in the 10 km event. Two years later he finished fifth in the 25 km at the 2011 World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai. Ky Hurst (born 11 March 1981) is an Australian swimmer and Ironman (surf lifesaving), ironman. He competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the Swimming at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's marathon 10 kilometre, 10km marathon swimming event and finished in 11th place, after qualifying by finishing fifth at the 2008 International Swimming Federation, FINA World Open Water Swimming Championship.
