2006 Ironman World Championship
The 2006 Ironman World Championship was a long distance triathlon competition that was held on October 21, 2006 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. It was the 30th edition of the Ironman World Championship, which has been held annually in Hawaii since 1978. The championship was organized by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC). Triathlon
A triathlon is an endurance multisport race consisting of Swimming (sport), swimming, Cycle sport, cycling, and running over various distances. Triathletes compete for fastest overall completion time, racing each segment sequentially with the time transitioning between the disciplines included. The word is of Greek language, Greek origin, from τρεῖς or ''treis'' (three) and ἆθλος or ''athlos'' (competition). The sport originated in the late 1970s in Southern California as sports clubs and individuals developed the sport. Chris Lieto
Chris Lieto (born February 7, 1972 in Red Bank, New Jersey) is a professional triathlete and the winner of the 2006 Ironman Japan, 2005 Ironman Canada, and 2002 Ironman Wisconsin triathlons. Athletic career Lieto grew up in Danville, California and later began his athletic career playing collegiate water polo at Long Beach State University. In 1997, he saw the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon World Championship on television and decided to participate in his first triathlon ever, which he won. Only three years later he became a professional triathlete. Just another three years after that, in 2003, he went on to place 13th at that same championship he saw on television which sparked his interest in the sport. After a disappointing race career in 2005, Lieto chose to return to work as a mortgage broker while still continuing to train. Natascha Badmann
Natascha Badmann (born 6 December 1966) is a professional triathlete from Switzerland. She is a 6-time winner of the Ironman World Championships in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii in 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2005 ; in 1998 she became the first European woman to win the Ironman Triathlon World Championship. Natascha works in Switzerland as a social worker, and speaks German, English, French, and Italian. She currently lives in Winznau, Switzerland with her husband Toni and daughter Anastasia. Her daughter Anastasia was born days before she turned 18. Nicknamed the "Swiss Miss", Badmann won her first Ironman World Championship at the age of 29, when her daughter was already 13 years old. Katherine Jessie Jean "Kate" Allen (born 25 April 1970, in Geelong, Australia) is an Australian-Austrian triathlete. She won the gold medal in the women's triathlon at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Early life Kate Allen grew up on a sheep-farming property with her three brothers at Teesdale in southeastern Australia. From an early age her parents encouraged her to run, and she used to frequently jog to primary school some 3 kilometres from home. At the age of four Allen began participating in Little Athletics at Landy Field in Geelong. Lisa Bentley (born November 28, 1968) is a Canadian triathlete. She has been competing on the Ironman race series since late in the 1990s. In 1988, Bentley was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. Despite this, she has won 11 Ironman competitions.
