2006 International Criminal Court Judges Election
An ordinary election for six judges of the International Criminal Court was held during the resumption of the 4th session of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court in New York on 26 January 2006. Background The judges elected at this election were to take office on 11 March 2006. All six judges elected for a three-year term in 2003 were eligible for re-election, all of them ran. The election was governed by the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Its article 36(8)(a) states that " e States Parties shall, in the selection of judges, take into account the need, within the membership of the Court, for: * (i) The representation of the principal legal systems of the world; * (ii) Equitable geographical representation; and * (iii) A fair representation of female and male judges." Judges Of The International Criminal Court
The eighteen judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC) are elected for nine-year terms by the member-countries of the court. Candidates must be nationals of those countries and they must "possess the qualifications required in their respective States for appointment to the highest judicial offices". A judge may be disqualified from "any case in which his or her impartiality might reasonably be doubted on any ground", and a judge may be removed from office if found "to have committed serious misconduct or a serious breach of his or her duties" or is unable to exercise his or her functions. The judges are organized into three divisions: the Pre-Trial Division, Trial Division, and Appeals Division. Effie Owuor
Effie Owuor (born 1943) is a Kenyan lawyer and judge who was the country's first female State Counsel, Magistrate, High Court (Kenya), High Court Judge, and Court of Appeal of Kenya, Court of Appeal Judge. Early life and education Owuor was born in 1943 in Kakamega and attended Butere Girls High School and Alliance Girls High School. She graduated from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in 1967, which was at the time the only university offering law degrees in East Africa. Career Owuor became a State Counsel in the Attorney General's Chambers in 1967. She became Kenya's first female magistrate in 1970 and senior magistrate in 1974. Anita Ušacka
Anita Ušacka (born 26 April 1952) is a Latvian and international judge and legal academic. She has been a judge of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Latvia and of the Trial and Appeals Divisions of the International Criminal Court (ICC). She was President of the Appeals Division of the International Criminal Court in 2011/2012. She retired in 2015. Early life and education Ušacka was born on 26 April 1952 in Riga, Latvia, the only daughter of Arturs Ušackis and Anna Krontāle. She had two elder brothers, Ivars (b. 1944) and Juris (b. 1948). Ušacka has a son, Aleksejs Ušackis, born on 13 December 1980. Ušacka spent her childhood in Riga, Latvia, where she attended primary and secondary schools. Tuiloma Neroni Slade (born 8 April 1941) held the post of secretary general of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat from 2008 to 4 December 2014. He was elected to the position for three years on 20 August 2008. Slade was reappointed to a second term by the leaders of the Pacific Islands Forum on 8 September 2011. The states parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court are those sovereign states that have ratified, or have otherwise become party to, the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. The Rome Statute is the treaty that established the International Criminal Court, an international court that has jurisdiction over certain international crimes, including genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes that are committed by nationals of states parties or within the territory of states parties. Akua Kuenyehia
Akua Kuenyehia (born 1947) is a Ghanaian academic and lawyer who served as judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC) from 2003 to 2015. She also served as First Vice-president of the Court. She was one of the three female African judges at the ICC. Kuenyehia represented Ghana on the United Nations' Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) committee in 2003 and worked hard to contribute to its reputation and influence.
