2006 European Athletics Championships – Women's 100 Metres
These are the results of the Women's 100 metres event at the 2006 European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden. There were a total number of 30 participating athletes. The final was held on Wednesday August 9, 2006. Gevaert lead from the start, and was an obvious winner, with a few other athletes in contention however Grigoryeva and the 40-year-old Khabarova claimed the silver and bronze medals respectively. 100 Metres
The 100 metres, or 100-meter dash, is a sprint race in track and field competitions. The shortest common outdoor running distance, the dash is one of the most popular and prestigious events in the sport of athletics. It has been contested at the Summer Olympics since 1896 for men and since 1928 for women. The inaugural World Championships were in 1983. List Of European Athletics Championships Records
The European Athletics Championships is a biennial event (since 2010), which began in 1934. European Athletics accepts only athletes who are representing one of the organisation's European member states and the body recognises records set at editions of the European Athletics Championships. The Championships records in athletics are the best marks set in competitions at the event. The athletics events at the Championships are divided into four groups: track events (including sprints, middle- and long-distance running, hurdling and relays), field events (including javelin, discus, hammer, pole vault, long and triple jumps), road events and combined events (the heptathlon and decathlon). Verena Sailer
Verena Sailer (born 16 October 1985 in Illertissen) is a retired German sprinter, who specialised in the 100 metres. Her personal best time is 11.02 seconds, achieved in August 2013. She won the gold medal at the 2010 European Athletics Championships in Barcelona. During her sporting career she was a member of MTG Mannheim. Sailer represented Germany at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She competed in the 4 × 100 metres relay together with Anne Möllinger, Cathleen Tschirch and Marion Wagner. In their first round heat they placed third behind Jamaica and Russia and in front of China. Their time of 43.59 seconds was the eighth time overall out of sixteen participating nations. With this result they qualified for the final, in which they sprinted to a time of 43.28 seconds, which was the fifth place. Daria Onyśko-Korczyńska (born 30 July 1981 in Kołobrzeg) is a retired track and field sprint athlete who competed internationally for Poland. She finished eighth in the 100 metres final at the 2006 European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg, and ninth one month later at the 2006 IAAF World Cup. She won the bronze medal in 60 metres at the 2007 European Indoor Championships. Korczynska represented Poland at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She competed at the 100 metres sprint and placed third in her first round heat after Oludamola Osayomi and Debbie Ferguson in a time of 11.22 seconds. Merlene Ottey
Merlene Joyce Ottey (born 10 May 1960) is a Jamaican-Slovenian former track and field sprinter. She began her career representing Jamaica in 1978, and continued to do so for 24 years, before representing Slovenia from 2002 to 2012. She is ranked fourth on the all-time list over 60 metres (indoor), eighth on the all-time list over 100 metres and sixth on the all-time list over 200 metres. She is the current world indoor record holder for 200 metres with 21.87 seconds, set in 1993. She was named Jamaican Sportswoman of the Year 13 times between 1979 and 1995. Anyika Onuora (born 28 October 1984) is a retired British sprint track and field athlete who competed in the 100 metres, 200 metres and 400 metres, and also the 4×100 metres relay and 4x400 metres relay. Véronique Ngo Mang (born December 15, 1984) is a track and field sprint athlete, competing internationally for France. Biography She arrived in France with her mother, brother and sister in 1995. She represented Cameroon until 2003 when she gained French citizenship. She started running at age 12 in France. She suffered a strained leg muscle in 2000 and a knee injury in 2001. Georgia (or Yeoryía) Koklóni ( el, Γεωργία Κοκλώνη) (born 7 May 1981 in Athens) is a Greek sprinter who specializes in 60 metres and 100 metres. Her first major competition was the 2001 IAAF World Indoor Championships, but she was eliminated in the semi-finals of the 60 m. She won the 60 m bronze at the 2002 European Athletics Indoor Championships, however, and went on to win a gold medal at the 2003 European Athletics U23 Championships, winning the 100 m in 11.33 seconds.
