2006 European Athletics Championships – Men's Shot Put
The men's shot put at the 2006 European Athletics Championships were held at the Ullevi on August 7. Ralf Bartels was outside the podium before the final attempt, having managed 20.57 in his first five, whereas Andrei Mikhnevich and Joachim Olsen had achieved their best attempts in round two. However, Bartels put the shot two centimetres further than Mikhnevich, and despite Olsen coming up with a second 21-metre put with 21.04 in his final attempt, it was not enough to better his previous attempts. In 2013 it was revealed that Mikhnevich tested positive for prohibited substances at the 2005 World Championships. Since this was his second offense, he was given a lifetime ban and all his results from August 2005 on were annulled. In addition, the results of finalists Ville Tiisanoja and Yuriy Bilonoh were also voided for doping offences as indicated in the official results at the European Athletics website. The 19th European Athletics Championships were held in Gothenburg, Sweden, between 7 August and 13 August 2006. The competition arena was the Ullevi Stadium and the official motto "Catch the Spirit". Mikuláš Konopka
Mikuláš Konopka (born 23 January 1979 in Rimavská Sobota, Banská Bystrica) is a retired Slovak shot putter. Konopka originally won the bronze medal at the 2002 European Indoor Championships with a personal best throw (indoor) of 20.87 metres, but tested positive for stanozolol and lost the medal. He was suspended between March 2002 and March 2004. His personal best throw outdoor is 20.66 metres, achieved in May 2001 in Ostrava. He currently holds the Slovak indoor record with 21.57, achieved when he won the 2007 European Indoor Championships. On 13 May 2008 Konopka tested positive for metandienone and subsequently received a lifetime ban from competing due to a second doping violation. Galin Kostadinov ( bg, Галин Костадинов; born December 24, 1979, in Dobrich) is a retired Bulgarian shot putter. He represented his nation Bulgaria, as a 35-year-old, in the shot put at the 2004 Summer Olympics, and also trained as a member of the athletics squad for the sport club Dobrudzha in his native Dobrich under his coach and mentor Ivan Petrov. His main honor was the silver medal at the 2009 European Indoor Championships with a throw of 20.42 metres. Mika Tapani Vasara (born 22 October 1983 in Pieksämäki, Finland) is a male shot putter from Finland. Vasara won his first medal in the Finnish Championships in 2006 when he won the bronze in the indoors championships and silver in the outdoors. On 4 June 2006, in Leppävirta, Finland, Vasara put the shot over the 20-m line for the first time in his career, making him the 20th member of the 20 meter club. Conny Karlsson (born 30 December 1975 in Dragsfjärd, Finland) is a 195-cm tall former Finnish shot putter, who competed for Pargas IF. His personal best in the men's shot put currently stands at 20.78 m, which he put on 4 August 2001 in the World Championships in Edmonton, Canada. He was coached by Robert Malmberg. Karlsson has six medals from the Finnish Championships, three of which are gold.
