2005 Guinea-Bissau Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Guinea-Bissau on 19 June 2005, with a second round runoff on 24 July. The elections marked the end of a transition to democratic rule after the previously elected government was overthrown in a September 2003 military coup led by General Veríssimo Correia Seabra. The result was a victory for former President and independent candidate João Bernardo Vieira. Background Following the coup, a civilian government was nominated to oversee the transition and sworn in on 28 September 2003. Henrique Rosa was appointed interim President following talks with military, political, and civil society leaders, while Artur Sanhá of the Party for Social Renewal (PRS) was named Prime Minister. João Bernardo Vieira
João Bernardo "Nino" Vieira (; 27 April 1939 – 2 March 2009) was a Bissau-Guinean politician who was the President of Guinea-Bissau from 1980 to 1999, except for a three-day period in May 1984, and from 2005 to 2009. After seizing power from President Luís Cabral in a military coup in 1980, Vieira ruled as part of the Military Council of the Revolution until 1984, when civilian rule was returned. Opposition parties were allowed in 1991, and Vieira won a multiparty presidential election in 1994. He was ousted at the end of the 1998–1999 civil war and went into exile. He made a political comeback in 2005, winning that year's presidential election. Vieira was killed by soldiers on 2 March 2009, apparently in retaliation for a bomb blast that killed Guinea-Bissau's military chief General Batista Tagme Na Waie hours before. Mamadú Iaia Djaló
Mamadu Iaia Djaló (c. 1962 – 20 December 2021) was a Guinea-Bissau politician, and the founder and leader of the New Democracy Party. Political career Running as an independent presidential candidate in the 2005 presidential election, Djaló finished sixth out of thirteen presidential candidates, receiving 1.59% of the vote. In 2007, he founded the New Democracy Party, and contested the 2009 presidential elections, in which he finished fourth out of eleven candidates, with 3.11% of the vote. He did not contest the 2012 presidential elections, but in 2014 general elections he finished fifth out of thirteen with 4.56% of the vote and his party won one seat in parliament. In April 2018 he was appointed Minister of Justice and Human Rights. In a cabinet reshuffle in July 2019, he was appointed Minister of Commerce and Industry. Francisco José Fadul (born 15 December 1953) is a Bissau-Guinean politician who was Prime Minister from 3 December 1998 to 19 February 2000. He led the United Social Democratic Party (PUSD), one of the country's main political parties, from 2002 to 2006. Aregado Mantenque Té (born 1963 in Caio) was a Bissau-Guinean politician who was the leader of the Workers' Party. He attended high school in Bissau while working as a shoe-shine boy. He soon became interested in politics and before finishing school he had to leave Bissau for Gambia and then Senegal. In this time he worked mainly in docks in Gambia and Dakar and became an activist for FLING the democratic opposition to Luis Cabral. Eventually he was able to move to Portugal where he completed his education becoming a doctor of law at the Universidade Moderna in Lisbon in 2002. Mutiny is a revolt among a group of people (typically of a military, of a crew or of a crew of Piracy, pirates) to oppose, change, or overthrow an organization to which they were previously loyal.
