2005 Big South Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 2005 Big South Conference men's basketball tournament took place March 1–5, 2005, at campus sites. The tournament was won by the Winthrop Eagles, their first of what would become four consecutive titles, led by head coach Gregg Marshall. They defeated the #7 in the championship game 68–46. Format The top eight of the conference's nine teams were eligible for the tournament, seeded by conference winning percentage. All games were hosted at campus sites, with home-field advantage going to the higher seed. This gave the #1 seed Winthrop home-court advantage throughout the tournament. Winthrop Coliseum
Winthrop Coliseum is a 6,100-seat multi-purpose arena in Rock Hill, South Carolina. It was built in 1982 and is home to the Winthrop University Eagles basketball and volleyball teams. The facility accommodates conventions, trade shows, concerts, special events, and other sporting tournaments. In 2015, a Democratic presidential candidate forum featuring Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Martin O'Malley was scheduled to take place at the coliseum but was later moved to an alternative location on Winthrop University's campus. In 2016, then presidential candidate, Donald Trump held a rally at the Winthrop Coliseum. During the rally, a Muslim American woman who stood in silent protest was removed by police. Rock Hill, SC
Rock Hill is the largest city in York County, South Carolina and the fifth-largest city in the state. It is also the fourth-largest city of the Charlotte metropolitan area, behind Charlotte, Concord, and Gastonia (all located in North Carolina, unlike Rock Hill). 2004–05 Winthrop Eagles Men's Basketball Team
The 2004–05 Winthrop Eagles men's basketball team represented Winthrop University in the 2004–05 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Eagles, led by head coach Gregg Marshall, played their home games at the Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill, South Carolina, as members of the Big South Conference. After losing their conference opener, the Eagles went on a 15-game win streak to run away with the Big South Conference regular season title. They extended the streak to 18 games by winning the 2005 Big South tournament to earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Gregg Marshall
Michael Gregg Marshall (born February 27, 1963) is an American college basketball coach whose most recent position was head coach at Wichita State University. Marshall has coached his teams to appearances in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament in 14 of 22 years as a head coach. He is the winningest head coach in Wichita State and Winthrop history with 331 and 194 wins, respectively. He resigned on November 17, 2020, after an internal investigation following allegations by multiple former players detailing physical and verbal abuse at the hands of Marshall. Marshall was paid a settlement of $7,750,000 by Wichita State for his resignation. James Shuler (May 29, 1959 – March 17, 1986) was a U.S. Olympic and professional boxer from Philadelphia known as "Black Gold." Amateur career Shuler was trained by Joe Frazier. Big South Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The Big South Conference men's basketball tournament (popularly known as the Big South tournament) is the conference championship tournament in basketball for the Big South Conference. The tournament has been held every year since 1986. It is a single-elimination tournament and seeding is based on regular season records. The winner, declared conference champion, receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA men's basketball tournament. However, the conference did not have an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament from 1986 to 1990, and in 1995. Before the 1994-95 season, Campbell departed the Big South due to scheduling conflicts. This left the conference with just five teams having played at the Division I level for at least five years, short of the six such members required by the NCAA for a conference to receive an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.
