2005 Apulian Regional Election
The Apulian regional election of 2005 took place on 3–4 April 2005. Nichi Vendola (Communist Refoundation Party) defeated incumbent Raffaele Fitto (Forza Italia). The success of Vendola came somewhat unexpected. In a Southern Italian Region, expected to be morally conservative, Vendola, a communist and homosexual, defeated Fitto, a conservative Christian democrat. Regional Council Of Apulia
The Regional Council of Apulia (''Consiglio Regionale della Puglia'') is the legislative assembly of Apulia. It was first elected in 1970, when the ordinary regions were instituted, on the basis of the Constitution of Italy of 1948. Composition The Regional Council of Apulia was originally composed of 50 regional councillors. The number of regional councillors increased to 60 in 2000 and subsequently to 70 in 2005, following a modification of the regional Statute in 2004. In the 2005 regional election the number of councillors further raised to 78, following a further allocation of 8 regional councillors to the center-left winning coalition. Following the decree-law n. 138 of 13 August 2011 the number of regional councillors returned to 50, with an additional seat reserved for the President of the Region. New Italian Socialist Party
The New Italian Socialist Party or New PSI ( it, Nuovo Partito Socialista Italiano or ''Nuovo PSI'', NPSI), more recently styled as Liberal Socialists – NPSI, is a political party in Italy which professes a social-democratic ideology and claims to be the successor to the historical Italian Socialist Party, which was disbanded after the judiciary tempest of the early 1990s (see ''Mani pulite''). Apulia First of All (''La Puglia Prima di Tutto'', PPT) is a regionalist-centrist political party in Italy active in Apulia, as local branch of Forza Italia. The party was launched in 2005 as a civic list in support of Raffaele Fitto, the outgoing President of the Region of Forza Italia. In the 2005 regional election PPT gained 9.2% of the vote and 5 seats in the Regional Council, while Fitto was defeated by Nichi Vendola. The party has since organized on a stable basis and gained some autonomy from Fitto, although it can be considered a sort of sister-party of The People of Freedom, the party in which Fitto and Forza Italia merged in 2009. The United Democratic Christians (''Democratic Cristiani Unity'', DCU) was a Christian-democratic Italian political party based in the Italian region of Apulia. The party was founded by Giovanni Mongiello, formerly a Christian Democrat, who had been Undersecretary of Agriculture in the second Prodi government, by a split from the Union of Christian and Centre Democrats (UDC) in 2004. The Italian Democratic Socialist Party (, PSDI) is a minor social-democratic political party in Italy established in 2004 as the continuation of the historical Italian Democratic Socialist Party, so that the new PSDI numbers its congresses in perfect continuity with the old PSDI.
