2004–05 Wigan Athletic F.C. Season
During the 2004–05 English football season, Wigan Athletic F.C. competed in the Football League Championship. Season summary After only 27 years as a Football League club, Wigan Athletic won promotion to English football's top flight for the first time in their history, securing promotion on the final day of the Championship league campaign as runners-up in their division. This was also their highest-ever finish in the Football League in their history. It was also only Wigan's second season in the second tier of the English league, having just missed out on the playoffs a year earlier. Wigan's league success did not translate to the domestic cup competitions: they only played one match in each cup before being knocked out. This may have turned out to be beneficial to Wigan, as it allowed the club to focus on the league rather than a cup run. Paul Jewell
Paul Jewell (born 28 September 1964) is an English football manager and former player, who was most recently director of football at Swindon Town. Jewell began his playing career with Liverpool, continued at Wigan Athletic and concluded in a ten-year spell with Bradford City, apart from a short loan spell with Grimsby Town. When his playing career ended, he became part of the coaching staff at Bradford City. Jewell was appointed manager in 1998 and took City to the Premier League before resigning and becoming manager of Sheffield Wednesday. He returned to Wigan Athletic to win a second promotion to the Premier League, but resigned a day after he kept them up in the 2006–07 season. He later joined Derby County on 28 November 2007, before resigning 13 months later. Stephen McMillan
Stephen Thomas McMillan (born 19 January 1976, in Edinburgh) is a Scottish former footballer, who retired from professional football in February 2007. He played for Troon, Motherwell and Wigan Athletic. Career McMillan started his career at Scottish Junior side Troon before joining Motherwell in 1993. While at Motherwell, McMillan suffered a broken leg, which would lead to several injury problems in his later career. He bounced back from that unfortunate incident to develop into an all-around defender, able to move forward into attacking positions when needed. McMillan was sold to Wigan Athletic in March 2001 for £550,000 on the same day as teammate Lee McCulloch. He was an instant hit at Wigan, but a series of injuries ruined his career. Gary Teale
Gary Stewart Teale (born 21 July 1978) is a Scottish professional football player and coach. Teale started his career in Scotland in 1995 with Clydebank and Ayr United. He moved to England in 2001 when he signed for Wigan Athletic and played an important part in the Wigan side that rose from the third tier ( Division Two) to second (Division One) for the first time in the club's history and then went one step further to reach the top flight. Whilst at Wigan he started in the 2006 Football League Cup Final. He then left for Championship side Derby County where he achieved promotion to the Premier League for the second time, although Teale was not a member of the matchday 16 for the 2007 Football League Championship play-off Final. Nicky Eaden
Nicholas Jeremy Eaden (born 12 December 1972) is an English football coach and former professional footballer, he is a senior professional development coach at EFL League One side Barnsley. As a player he was as a full-back who accumulated 550 appearances in the Football League. He was part of the Barnsley team who played in the Premier League during the 1997–98 season. He also won promotions to the top flight with both Birmingham City and Wigan Athletic, also playing professionally for Nottingham Forest and Lincoln City. He rounded his career off with spells with non-league sides Halesowen Town, Solihull Moors and Kettering Town. Jason Jarrett (footballer)
Jason Lee Jarrett (born 14 September 1979) is an English former footballer who played as a midfielder. He made 296 appearances in league and cup competitions in a 13-year career in the English Football League. Jarrett started his career with Blackpool in 1998, the next year he moved on to Wrexham. He spent 2000 to 2002 with Bury, before signing with Wigan Athletic. In 2005, he joined Norwich City, moving on to Preston North End the next year. He spent the first part of 2009 with Brighton & Hove Albion after negotiating a release from his contract at Preston, he spent the later half of 2009 signed with Port Vale. In summer 2010 he signed with Oldham Athletic. He joined FC Halifax Town in July 2012, and moved on to Chester via Airbus UK Broughton in 2013. David Wright (footballer)
David Wright (born 1 May 1980) is an English former professional footballer and manager who was most recently Assistant First-Team Coach of League One club Milton Keynes Dons. Wright began his playing career at Crewe Alexandra, where he helped the club to promotion to the First Division in 2002–03 following the club's relegation to the Second Division in the previous season. He went on the make over 200 league appearances for the club. He also played over 100 league games for Ipswich Town between 2007 and 2010, as well as representing Wigan Athletic, Norwich City on loan, Crystal Palace, Gillingham on loan and Colchester United. Alan Mahon
Alan Joseph Mahon (born 4 April 1978) is an Irish former professional footballer who played a midfielder and was capped by the Republic of Ireland. Playing career Club career Early career Dublin-born Mahon, who was educated at St. James Street Christian Brothers Secondary School in the Irish capital, joined English Football League club Tranmere Rovers in 1995. In five years at the club, Mahon made a total of 144 appearances, scoring fourteen goals. Gary Walsh
Gary Walsh (born 21 March 1968) is an English football coach and professional former footballer who was most recently head goalkeeping coach at EFL Championship club West Bromwich Albion. As a player, he was a goalkeeper from 1985 to 2006, notably playing Premier League football with Manchester United, Oldham Athletic, Middlesbrough, Bradford City and Wigan Athletic. He also played in Scotland for Airdrieonians. He was capped twice by at England U21 level. Graham Kavanagh
Graham Anthony Kavanagh (born 2 December 1973) is an Irish football manager and former professional player. Kavanagh had a 19-year-long career and played for Middlesbrough, Stoke City, Cardiff City, Wigan Athletic, Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday and Carlisle United. He also played 16 games for the Republic of Ireland national football team, scoring once. Club career Kavanagh began his career at Home Farm, before joining Middlesbrough in 1991 but struggled to ever hold down a first team place and was sold to Stoke City in 1996, after a short loan spell at the club, for £250,000. Lee McCulloch
Lee Henry McCulloch (born 14 May 1978) is a Scottish professional football coach and former player. He is the first team assistant manager at Scottish Premiership club Heart of Midlothian. McCulloch was capped on eighteen occasions by the Scotland national football team. During his career he has played for Motherwell, Wigan Athletic, Rangers and Kilmarnock at club level. He played mostly as a central defender or a defensive midfielder during his time at Rangers (he also played striker for the club when required) but has also played as an attacking midfielder and winger during his time in English football. Andreas Johansson (footballer Born 1978)
Roy Johan Andreas Johansson (born 5 July 1978) is a Swedish former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He got his breakthrough with the Swedish team Djurgårdens IF, winning two Allsvenskan championships and two Swedish Cup trophies. He later played for Premier League team Wigan Athletic, before joining AaB with whom he won the Danish Superliga and was named team captain. David Baillie Graham (born 6 October 1978) is a Scottish footballer who last played for Sheffield F.C. His favoured position is as a forward, although he can also play in midfield. He has been capped at Under-21 level by his country. Playing career Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Graham began his career with Rangers, making his debut in the 5–3 away win against Shelbourne in the UEFA Cup first qualifying round first leg. He made four further appearances, all as a substitute before moving to Dunfermline Athletic in November 1998.
