Two human polls comprise the 2004–05 NCAA Division I women's basketball rankings, the AP Poll and the Coaches Poll, in addition to various publications' preseason polls. The AP poll is currently a poll of sportswriters, while the ''USA Today'' Coaches' Poll is a poll of college coaches. The AP conducts polls weekly through the end of the regular season and conference play, while the Coaches poll conducts a final, post-NCAA tournament poll as well. AP Poll
The Associated Press poll (AP poll) provides weekly rankings of the top 25 NCAA teams in one of three Division I college sports: football, men's basketball and women's basketball. The rankings are compiled by polling 62 sportswriters and broadcasters from across the nation. Each voter provides their own ranking of the top 25 teams, and the individual rankings are then combined to produce the national ranking by giving a team 25 points for a first place vote, 24 for a second place vote, and so on down to 1 point for a twenty-fifth place vote. Ballots of the voting members in the AP poll are made public. Coaches Poll
The Coaches Poll is a weekly ranking of the top 25 NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) college football, Division I college basketball, and Division I college baseball teams. The football version of the poll has been known officially as the Amway Coaches Poll since 2014. The football rankings are compiled by the Amway Board of Coaches which is made up of 62 head coaches at Division I FBS institutions. All coaches are members of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). The basketball rankings are compiled by the USA Today Sports Board of Coaches which is made up of 32 head coaches at Division I institutions. All are members of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). 2004–05 LSU Lady Tigers Basketball Team
The 2004–05 LSU Lady Tigers basketball team represented Louisiana State University during the 2004–05 NCAA Division I women's basketball season college basketball season. The Lady Tigers, were led by first-year head coach Pokey Chatman, played their home games at Pete Maravich Assembly Center, and were members of the Southeastern Conference. They finished the season 33–3, 14–0 in SEC play to finish atop the conference regular season standings. As the one seed in the SEC women's tournament, they lost in the championship game to Tennessee. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA women's tournament as the No. 1 seed in the Chattanooga region. The Lady Tigers defeated Stetson, Arizona, Liberty, and Duke to reach the Final Four in back-to-back seasons. LSU was beaten in the National semifinals by Baylor. 2004–05 Michigan State Spartans Women's Basketball Team
The 2004–05 Michigan State Spartans women's basketball team represented Michigan State University during the 2004–05 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Spartans, led by fifth-year head coach Joanne P. McCallie, play their home games at the Breslin Center and were members of the Big Ten Conference. They finished the season 33–4, 14–2 in Big Ten play to win the regular season title. They also won the Big Ten women's tournament to receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Playing as the No. 1 seed in the Kansas City region (KC), the Spartans defeated Alcorn State, USC, Vanderbilt, and Stanford to reach the Final Four for the first time in program history. In the National Semifinal round, the Spartans defeated perennial power Tennessee, 68–64. Michigan State was beaten by Baylor, 84–62, in the National championship game.
