2004 Queen's Birthday Honours (Australia)
The 2004 Queen's Birthday Honours for Australia were announced on Monday 14 June 2004 by the Governor-General, Michael Jeffery. The Birthday Honours were appointments by some of the 16 Commonwealth realms of Queen Elizabeth II to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by citizens of those countries. The Birthday Honours are awarded as part of the Queen's Official Birthday celebrations during the month of June. Michael Chaney
Michael Alfred Chaney (born 15 April 1950) is an Australian businessman and former Chancellor (education), chancellor of the University of Western Australia. Early life Chaney was born in Perth on 15 April 1950. He was the third-youngest of seven children born to Fred Chaney Sr., Frederick Charles Chaney, who was a minister in the Menzies government (1949–1966), Menzies government and Lord Mayor of Perth. His brothers included Fred Chaney, Frederick Michael Chaney, who was also a federal government minister, and John Chaney (judge), John Chaney, a judge on the Supreme Court of Western Australia. Mahla Pearlman
Mahla Liane Pearlman (2 June 1937 – 2 December 2011) was an Australian lawyer and chief judge of the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales from 1992 to 2003. Early life and education Pearlman was born in Boggabri, New South Wales, the daughter of Minnie and Mark Pearlman. She attended Boggabri Public School with her younger brother Braham. She later attended MLC School in Burwood. She studied at the University of Sydney where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1957 and a Bachelor of Laws with Honours in 1960. Career Pearlman was admitted as a solicitor on 11 March 1960 and in 1981 became the first woman President of the Law Society of New South Wales. John O'Neill (businessman)
John Anthony O'Neill (born 1951) is an Australian sporting administrator and businessman. He has been involved with both rugby union and soccer at the national level, after being head of the State Bank of New South Wales. Former CEO of the Australian Rugby Union, instrumental in staging the 2003 Rugby World Cup. In 2004, O'Neill was appointed head of the newly created Football Federation Australia by chairman Frank Lowy, a position he remained in until 7 November 2006. Dr Brenda Mary Niall (born 25 November 1930) is an Australian biographer, literary critic and journalist. She is particularly noted for her work on Australia's well-known Boyd family of artists and writers. Educated at Genazzano FCJ College, in Kew, Victoria, and the University of Melbourne, Niall began writing during her time as Reader in the Department of English at Monash University. In June 2004 she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for "services to Australian literature, as an academic, biographer and literary critic" while in 2001 she was awarded the Centenary Medal for "service to Australian Society and the humanities in the study of Australian literature". Kemeri Murray
Kemeri Anne Murray (28 January 1932 – 2 August 2013) was an Australian lawyer and judge. She was the first woman appointed to the District Court of South Australia and the second female judge in the country. Upon her retirement in 2006, she was the country's longest serving judge. Early life and education Murray was born in Adelaide. She graduated from the University of Adelaide in Law in 1953 and Arts in 1954, studying piano at the Elder Conservatorium of Music. Career Murray was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor in 1955 and became a partner at Giles, Magarey and Lloyd, making her the first married woman partner in a South Australian law firm. Catherine McGowan AO (born 29 November 1953) is a former Australian politician who was the independent MP for the rural Victorian seat of Indi from the 2013 federal election, when she defeated Liberal MP Sophie Mirabella, until her retirement before the 2019 federal election. Stephen Leeder AO FRACP FFPH FAFPHM FRACGP (born 13 December 1941 in Grafton, New South Wales) is an emeritus professor of public health and community medicine at the University of Sydney, where he was dean of medicine from 1997 to 2002. Leeder is an adjunct professor of public health at the Western Sydney University, an adjunct professor of epidemiology at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in New York. He held the position as chair of the Western Sydney Local Health District Board from 2011-2016. Alan Belford Jones AO (born 13 April 1941 or 1943) is an Australian former radio broadcaster. He is a former coach of the Australia national rugby union team and rugby league coach and administrator. Tamara Margaret "Tamie" Fraser (née Beggs; born 28 February 1936) is the widow of Malcolm Fraser, who held office as Prime Minister of Australia between 1975 and 1983. James Dale (scientist)
James Langham Dale is an Australian agricultural scientist. He is a professor in the Faculty of Science School of Biology & Environmental Science at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Dale is best known for development of improved strains of bananas. In 2021, his team earned recognition for a strain of Cavendish bananas resistant to Panama disease tropical race 4.
