2004 Erbil Bombings
The 2004 Erbil bombings was a double suicide attack on the offices of Iraqi Kurdish political parties in Erbil, Kurdistan Region on 1 February 2004. The attackers detonated explosives strapped to their bodies as hundreds gathered to celebrate Eid Al-Adha in Erbil. A former government minister, the deputy governor of Erbil Governorate and the city's police chief were among those killed at the offices of the Kurdistan Region's main political groups, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). The attacks occurred as party leaders were receiving hundreds of visitors to mark the start of Eid. Sami Abdulrahman Park ( ku, پارکی سامی عەبدولڕەحمان ,Parka Samî Ebdulrehman) is a park in Erbil, Kurdistan Region in Iraq. History The site was formerly the location of Saddam Hussein's 5th Corps Army military base. Construction of the park began in 1998, and it was completed the same year. It is named after Sami Abdulrahman, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government who was killed in a suicide bombing on 1 February 2004, aged 71. Features The park is 200 hectares (2.0 km2) in size and contains two lakes, a rose garden and the Martyrs Monument as well as a restaurant and market. Al-Hayat ( ar, الحياة meaning "Life") was a London-based, pan-Arab newspaper owned by Saudi Prince Khalid bin Sultan, that had a circulation estimated over 200,000. 2021 Erbil Missile Attacks
The 2021 Erbil rocket attacks occurred when multiple rockets were launched against Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, Iraq. On 15 February, approximately fourteen rockets were fired from an area south of the city at around 21:30 local time. Three of the rockets directly hit the Combined Joint Task Force, U.S.-led coalition base near Erbil International Airport, while the other rockets hit residential areas and civilian facilities near the airport.
