Television In Estonia
Television in Estonia was introduced in 1955, following the Soviet government's decision to establish a television station in 1953. The National TV Channel ETV has maintained an archive since 1955 in which broadcasts of unique aspects of Estonian culture are held. Northern Estonia receives television signals from Finland. During the 1970s and 1980s, Finnish broadcasts were more popular than Soviet-Estonian offerings until the Singing Revolution, with many Estonians enjoying ''Dallas'' and other programs portraying non-Communist lifestyles. Digital television was officially launched on December 15, 2006 when the operator Eesti Digitaaltelevisiooni AS launched its pay service ZUUMtv, operated by Starman, on two multiplexes. Ruffus
Ruffus was an indie rock band from Estonia that was originally known as Claire's Birthday. They represented their country in the Eurovision Song Contest 2003. Members * Vaiko Eplik (vocals) was born in 1981 in Rapla, into a music-loving family (as most of the band) of collective farm workers. Eplik studied music at the Tallinn Music School, specialising in pop-jazz singing and also studied the guitar, which he now teaches. *Jaan Pehk (guitar) was born in 1975 in Türi. He has a degree in environmental protection. He studied pop-jazz singing at the Tallinn Music School and is now an active poet in the literary group Tartu Young Poets' Club (NAK). *Ivo Etti (bass) was born in 1979 in Väike-Maarja. He studied at the Children's Music School in Rakvere and graduated from the Tallinn Music School, where he specialised in playing the clarinet. Eurovision Song Contest 2003
The Eurovision Song Contest 2003 was the 48th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Riga, Latvia, following the country's victory at the with the song " I Wanna" by Marie N. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster Latvijas Televīzija (LTV), the contest was held at the Skonto Hall on 24 May 2003. The contest was presented by last year's winner Marie N and former contestant Renārs Kaupers. Twenty-six countries participated in the contest, beating the record of twenty-five first set in 1993. It saw the return of , , the , and after having been relegated from competing the previous year. also returned to the contest after being absent the previous year, while participated in the contest for the first time. , , , and were relegated due to their poor results in 2002. Eighties Coming Back
Estonia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2003 with the song "Eighties Coming Back" written by Vaiko Eplik. The song was performed by the band Ruffus. The Estonian broadcaster Eesti Televisioon (ETV) organised the national final '' Eurolaul 2003'' in order to select the Estonian entry for the 2003 contest in Riga, Latvia. Ten songs competed in the national final and "Eighties Coming Back" performed by Claire's Birthday was selected as the winner by an international jury panel. The band was later renamed as Ruffus for the Eurovision Song Contest. Estonia competed in the Eurovision Song Contest which took place on 24 May 2003. Performing during the show in position 17, Estonia placed twenty-first out of the 26 participating countries, scoring 14 points. Õnne 13 is an Estonian dramatic TV series that airs on ETV. Heikki Haravee
Heikki Haravee (born Heikki Huusmann; 29 April 1924 – 23 January 2003) was an Estonian actor, theatre director, and singer whose career spanned over fifty years; forty-three of which were spent at the Vanemuine theatre in Tartu. Early life Heikki Haravee was born and raised in Tallinn as Heikki Huusmann. The family changed the surname to Haravee in early 1939 when he was fourteen. He graduated from Tallinn 2 Gymnasium (now, Tallinn Secondary School of Science) in 1943 while Estonia was under German occupation during World War II. Afterward, he enrolled at the Estonian State Theatre Institute in Tallinn to study drama under instructors Ants Lauter, Priit Põldroos, Leo Kalmet, and Felix Moor, among others, graduating in 1949. Among his graduating classmates were Gunnar Kilgas, Jüri Järvet, Ellen Alaküla, and Ellen Kaarma. Helle-Reet Helenurm (26 January 1944 – 23 February 2003) was an Estonian actress whose career began in 1968 in theatre. She also performed as a radio, television, and film actress until her death, aged 59, of cancer. Early life and education Helle-Reet Helenurm was born in the town of Paide in Järva County, the only child of Udo and Ilse Helenurm (''née'' Petron), during the German occupation of Estonia in World War II. Following the reoccupation of Estonia by the Soviet Union in 1944, when she was just several months old, her father fled the country and settled in Germany and she was raised solely by her mother, who worked as an accountant. She knew little about her father until she was a teenager and didn't meet him until later in life. After establishing contact with him, the two subsequently remained in touch with one another until her death in 2003.
