Discus Throw
The discus throw (), also known as disc throw, is a track and field event in which an athlete throws a heavy disk (mathematics), disc—called a discus—in an attempt to mark a farther distance than their competitors. It is an classical antiquity, ancient sport, as demonstrated by the fifth-century-BC Myron statue ''Discobolus''. Although not part of the current pentathlon, it was one of the events of the Ancient Olympic pentathlon, ancient Greek pentathlon, which can be dated back to at least 708 BC, and it is part of the modern decathlon. Kristin Kuehl
Kristin "Kris" Kuehl (born July 30, 1970, in Windom, Minnesota) is a retired track and field athlete from the United States, who competed in the discus throw event. Kuehl attended Division III Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. Kuehl was the 2002 USA champion, and won the silver medal at the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, after gaining the bronze four years earlier in Mar del Plata. Her personal best throw is 65.34 metres (214.37 feet), achieved in April 2000 in St Paul. Shelley Jean Newman, now Parr and (née Drew), (born 8 August 1973) is a female retired English discus thrower. She was born in Carshalton, London and competed for Great Britain at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Athletics career Her personal best throw is 61.22 metres, achieved in June 2003 in Loughborough. This was the English record for many years and at the time and placed her fourth on the British outdoor all-time list, behind Meg Ritchie, Venissa Head and Philippa Roles. Anna Söderberg (born 11 June 1973 in Knista) is a female discus thrower from Sweden. Her personal best throw of 64.54 metres, achieved in July 1999 in Aremark, is the Swedish record for the event. She has represented her country at the Olympic Games on three occasions – in 2000, 2004 and 2008. She has also competed at the World Championships in Athletics, taking part in every edition from 1997 to 2009 with the sole exception of the 2001 World Championships. Neelam Jaswant Singh (born 8 January 1971 in Farmana) is an Indian discus thrower. Her personal best throw is 64.55 metres, achieved at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan. During the 2005 World Championships she tested positive for the banned stimulant pemoline in an in-competition test. In the year 1998, Neelam Jaswant Singh won the bronze medal at the Bangkok Asian Games. In the Kosanova International Athlete Meet held at Almaty (Kazakhstan), Neelam J. Singh has to her credit a gold medal performance. In August 2000, she also won a gold medal at the ATF that took place in Jakarta. But with a throw of 55.26 metres, she failed to make a mark in the Sydney Olympics. She has been married to her coach Jaswant Singh. Suzanne "Suzy" Powell-Roos (born September 3, 1976) is an American discus thrower. She competed at the 1996, 2000 and 2008 Olympics with the best result of 15th place in 2000. She holds the American record at 222 ft 0 in (67.67 m), which she set on March 14, 2007 in Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii at the "Big Wind" Discus Challenge. She set the world's best year performance in 2002, with a throw of 69.44 meters at the University of California, San Diego on April 27, 2002, the best throw in the world since 1999. Beatrice Roini Liua Faumuina (born 23 October 1974 in Auckland, New Zealand) is a former New Zealand discus thrower. Career Faumuina was a gold medallist at the 1997 World Championships in Athletics. She has represented New Zealand in four Summer Olympics. After winning the discus event at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester she was featured on a stamp from Samoa.
