2003 Transnistrian Referendum

	2003 Transnistrian Referendum A referendum was held in the breakaway republic of Transnistria on 6 April 2003. Voters were asked to support a change in the country's constitution that would allow the private ownership of land. Turnout was 38.92%, falling short of the 50% required by Transnistrian law for the referendum to be valid. 	Transnistria Transnistria, officially the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR), is an unrecognised breakaway state that is internationally recognised as a part of Moldova. Transnistria controls most of the narrow strip of land between the Dniester river and the Moldovan–Ukrainian border, as well as some land on the other side of the river's bank. Its capital and largest city is Tiraspol. Transnistria has been recognised only by three other unrecognised or partially recognised breakaway states: Abkhazia, Artsakh and South Ossetia. 	Referendums In Transnistria Referendums in Transnistria, according to the Transnistrian Constitution, are one of the lawful forms of expression of people's will. There have been seven referendums in Transnistria since 1989. Because of strict requirements only six of these seven referendums were successful. # Referendum on the formation of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic (PMSSR) took place in various parts of the Moldavian SSR, mostly east of the Dniester River, from December 1989 through November 1990.
