Pole Vault
Pole vaulting, also known as pole jumping, is a track and field event in which an athlete uses a long and flexible pole, usually made from fiberglass or carbon fiber, as an aid to jump over a bar. Pole jumping competitions were known to the Mycenaean Greeks, Minoan Greeks and Celts. It has been a full medal event at the Olympic Games since 1896 for men and since 2000 for women. It is typically classified as one of the four major jumping events in athletics, alongside the high jump, long jump and triple jump. It is unusual among track and field sports in that it requires a significant amount of specialised equipment in order to participate, even at a basic level. World records in athletics are ratified by World Athletics. Athletics records comprise the best performances in the sports of track and field, road running and racewalking. Records are kept for all events contested at the Olympic Games and some others. Unofficial records for some other events are kept by track and field statisticians. The only non-metric track distance for which official records are kept is the mile run. Criteria The criteria which must be satisfied for ratification of a world record are defined by World Athletics in Part III of the Competition Rules. Stacy Dragila
Stacy Renée Dragila (née Mikaelson; born March 25, 1971) is an American former pole vaulter. She is an Olympic gold medalist and a multiple world champion. Early life Dragila was born and raised in Auburn, California, northeast of Sacramento. She also participated in gymnastics, but had to give it up due to childhood asthma. She attended Placer Union High School where she played volleyball and ran on the track team as a sprinter, hurdler, and jumper. Early on she got coaching from Yuba Community College's John Orognen. She competed in the 300 meters hurdles at the CIF California State Meet, but didn't place. In 1990, she placed second at the Golden West Invitational in the 400 meters hurdles. She graduated from Idaho State University in 1995. At ISU, she competed in the heptathlon. Marie Poissonnier (born 4 May 1979 in Clermont-Ferrand, Puy-de-Dôme) is a female pole vaulter from France. Her personal best jump is 4.46 metres, achieved in July 2002 in Saint-Etienne. Krisztina Molnár (born 8 April 1976 in Budapest) is a former Hungarian athlete specializing in the pole vault. The 9th IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics were held in the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, UK from 14 to 16 March 2003.
