This is a list of British television related events from 2002. Events January *1 January **Provisional viewing figures released by the Broadcasters' Audience Research Board indicate that on average, BBC One had more viewers than ITV through 2001. British Television
Regular television broadcasts in the United Kingdom started in 1936 as a public service which was free of advertising, which followed the first demonstration of a transmitted moving image in 1926. Currently, the United Kingdom has a collection of free-to-air, free-to-view and subscription services over a variety of distribution media, through which there are over 480 channelsTaking the base Sky EPG TV Channels. A breakdown is impossible due to a) the number of platforms, b) duplication of services, c) regional services, d) part time operations, and e) audio. For the Sky platform alone, there are basically 485 TV channels, additionally 57 "timeshifted versions", 36 HDTV versions, 42 regional TV options, 81 audio channels, and 5 promotion channels as of mid-2010 for consumers as well as on-demand content. Sky News
Sky News is a British free-to-air television news channel and organisation. Sky News is distributed via an English-language radio news service, and through online channels. It is owned by Sky Group, a division of Comcast. John Ryley is the head of Sky News, a role he has held since June 2006. In 2019, Sky News was named Royal Television Society News Channel of the Year, the 12th time it has held the award. The channel and its live streaming world news is available on its website, TV platforms, and online platforms such as YouTube and Apple TV, and various mobile devices and digital media players. A sister channel, Sky News Arabia, is operated as a joint venture with the Abu Dhabi Media Investment Corporation. Robert Smith, Baron Smith Of Kelvin
Robert Haldane Smith, Baron Smith of Kelvin, (born 8 August 1944) is a British businessman and former Governor of the British Broadcasting Corporation. Smith was knighted in 1999, appointed to the House of Lords as an independent crossbench peer in 2008, and appointed Knight of the Thistle in the 2014 New Year Honours. He was also appointed to the Order of the Companions of Honour in 2016. Lord Smith of Kelvin serves as Chancellor of the University of Strathclyde and Chair of the British Business Bank. He is Chairman of IMI plc, Scottish Enterprise and Forth Ports Limited. ITV2
ITV2 is a British free-to-air television channel owned by ITV Digital Channels, a division of ITV plc. It was launched on 7 December 1998. For a number of years, it had the largest audience share after the five analogue terrestrial stations, a claim now held by its sister service ITV3 both of which are freely available to a majority of households. The channel is primarily aimed at the 16/18–34 age group, just like BBC Three, E4 and Sky Max and is known for American programming such as adult animations '' Family Guy,'' '' American Dad!'' and ''Bob's Burgers'', repeats of recently aired episodes of soap operas and other entertainment programming from ITV such as '' Coronation Street'' and ''Emmerdale''; 60-second entertainment news bulletin ''FYI Daily'', which airs in-between films; and original programming such as '' Celebrity Juice'' and '' Love Island''. UTV2
UTV2 was a television channel, owned by Ulster Television plc (now UTV Media). The channel was on digital terrestrial television and NTL cable in Northern Ireland. The channel launched on 28 June 1999 as ''TV You'', but was rebranded as ''UTV2'' in 2000. The programming consisted primarily of simulcasts with ITV2, as broadcast in England, Wales and the Scottish Borders, although they did also use archive programmes from UTV. Unusually, for a commercial station, UTV2 did not carry any advertising. This was presumably due to their failure to attract advertisers to UTV2, which was only receivable by a few thousand viewers. UTV2 closed on 22 January 2002 following a deal with ITV Digital and was replaced by ITV2. Bloody Sunday Inquiry
The Bloody Sunday Inquiry, also known as the Saville Inquiry or the Saville Report after its chairman, Lord Saville of Newdigate, was established in 1998 by British Prime Minister Tony Blair after campaigns for a second inquiry by families of those killed and injured in Derry on Bloody Sunday during the peak of The Troubles. It was published on 15 June 2010. The inquiry was set up to establish a definitive version of the events of Sunday 30 January 1972, superseding the tribunal set up under Lord Widgery that had reported on 19 April 1972, 11 weeks after the events, and to resolve the accusations of a whitewash that had surrounded it. The inquiry took the form of a tribunal established under the Tribunals of Inquiry (Evidence) Act 1921, and consisted of Lord Saville, William L. Hoyt, the former Chief Justice of New Brunswick and John L. Toohey, a former Justice of the High Court of Australia. Sunday (2002 Film)
''Sunday'' is a television drama, produced by Sunday Productions for Channel 4 and screened on 25 January 2002. It dramatises the events of "Bloody Sunday" through the eyes of the families of the dead and injured, specifically those of Leo Young, older brother of John Young, who was killed on the day. The timescale covers events in the years prior to Bloody Sunday, and subsequent events up to and including the Widgery Tribunal. It was written by Jimmy McGovern and directed by Charles McDougall, and the Channel 4 transmission was followed by a live studio debate about the issues involved. It was overshadowed by the rival ''Bloody Sunday'', shown eight days previously by ITV. While the ITV's ''Bloody Sunday'' filmed most of its scenes in Ballymun in Dublin, ''Sunday'' filmed the majority of its scenes in Derry itself. ''Bloody Sunday'' is a 2002 British-Irish film written and directed by Paul Greengrass based around the 1972 "Bloody Sunday (1972), Bloody Sunday" shootings in Derry, Northern Ireland. Although produced by ITV Granada, Granada Television as a TV film, it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on 16 January, a few days before its screening on ITV (TV channel), ITV on 20 January, and then in selected London cinemas from 25 January. Though set in Derry, the film was mostly shot in Ballymun in North Dublin, with some location scenes were shot in Derry, in Guildhall Square and in Creggan, Derry, Creggan on the actual route of the in 1972. Roy Hudd
Roy Hudd, OBE (16 May 1936 – 15 March 2020) was an English comedian, actor, presenter, radio host, author and authority on the history of music hall entertainment. Early life Hudd was born in Croydon on 16 May 1936 to Evalina "Evie" (née Barham) and Harry Hudd. His father was a carpenter who left the family shortly after the Second World War, and his mother, who had a history of mental health problems, commited suicide by gas when Hudd was 9 years old. Hudd was primarily brought up by his grandmother, and attended Tavistock Secondary Modern School in Croydon and Croydon Secondary Technical School. After completing his national service in the Royal Air Force, he studied commercial art at the Regent Street Polytechnic.
