2002 Af2 Season
The 2002 AF2 season was the third season of the AF2. It was preceded by 2001 and succeeded by 2003. The league champions were the Peoria Pirates, who defeated the Florida Firecats in ArenaCup III. This is also the first time that both conferences have the same division name (in that case, the American Conference Southern Division and the National Conference Southern Division, respectively). It is also the only season where both conferences have four divisions each, a la the 2002–present era of the NFL. Arena Football
Indoor American football, or arena football, is a variation of gridiron football played at ice hockey-sized indoor arenas. While varying in details from league to league, the rules of indoor football are designed to allow for play in a smaller arena. New Haven Ninjas
The New Haven Ninjas were an indoor American football team based in New Haven, Connecticut. They were an expansion team in the af2 for the 2002 season. On October 24, 2001, it was announced that Ninjas had won the name-the-team contest over Cyclones, Gladiators, Hawkeyes and ShoreDawgs. Along with the Ninjas, New Haven was joined by the Albany Conquest, Bakersfield Blitz, Cape Fear Wildcats, Fresno Frenzy, Hawaiian Islanders, Mobile Wizards, Mohegan Wolves, San Diego Riptide & the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers. New Haven played in the American Conference of the Northeast Division. In 2002, the Ninjas finished 6–10, third in the Northeast Division. Still, that wasn't enough to play football in August. Mobile Wizards
The Mobile Wizards were an af2 arena football team that played their home games in Mobile, Alabama at the Mobile Civic Center. On June 15, 2001, the af2 awarded a franchise to Mobile businessman Norris Armstrong, who ran the team with his wife Beth. The af2 club replaced the Mobile Seagulls in the market, who played the 2000 season in the IPFL and 2001 in the NIFL. The Civic Center (capacity: 10,112) was a hub of activity in early 2000s, as it also hosted the ECHL's Mobile Mysticks and the NBDL's Mobile Revelers. The Wizards were anything but on the turf or at the box office. They lost all sixteen games they played in 2002, often by ugly scores such as 80–18 and 72–6. The Pensacola Barracudas were an arena football team based in Pensacola, Florida. They were an inaugural member of the AF2, the Arena Football League's developmental league. They played for three seasons, from 2000 to 2002, when they folded. They made one playoff appearance in their first year. They played their home games at the Pensacola Civic Center. History The Barracudas were one of the fifteen original teams to join the AF2 in its inaugural 2000 season. Pensacola originally played in the National Conference and won its first five games en route to the playoffs before losing to the eventual undefeated champion Quad City Steamwheelers. Prior to the 2001 season, the Barracudas moved to the American Conference. They went 5-11 and missed the playoffs. The Charleston Swamp Foxes were one of the 15 original teams to join the inaugural 2000 AF2 season. They started off in the American Conference, before switching divisions in every year of their existence (2001-Northeast, 2002-Southern & 2003-Atlantic). Charleston played their home games in the North Charleston Coliseum. Every year, the Swamp Foxes improved their Win–loss record going 4-12 in 2000, then 7-9 in 2001 and 2002, & 9-7 in 2003. The Tallahassee Thunder were an arena football team based in Tallahassee, Florida. They were inaugural members of the af2, the Arena Football League's developmental league. They played for three seasons from 2000 to 2002, when they folded. They played their home games at the Tallahassee–Leon County Civic Center. The Thunder were established in 1999 and played in the af2's inaugural 2000 season. The team made the playoffs during their final two seasons but first-round losses to the Tennessee Valley Vipers and the Florida Firecats (respectively) contributed to the disbanding of the franchise after the 2002 season. The Columbus Wardogs were an arena football team in af2 that played their home games in the Columbus Civic Center in Columbus, Georgia, from 2001 through 2004. The franchise was relocated as the Mississippi Headhunters for the 2006 season, but did not play any games. The Carolina Rhinos were one of the original 15 teams to join the inaugural 2000 AF2 season. They were members of the American Conference for their entirety of existence, and the Eastern Division in 2001 and 2002. In their first year, they won 7 of their first 9 games, finished the 2000 season with a 9 wins and 7 losses, en route to the playoffs, before losing to the Augusta Stallions. In 2001, again, they won 7 of their first 9 games, completing a season record of 12 wins and 4 losses, and for the first time ever, they won a playoff game, beating the Tulsa Talons, before losing to the eventual champion, Quad City Steamwheelers.
