2002 Zamboanga Del Norte's 1st Congressional District Special Election
A special election for Zamboanga del Norte's 1st district seat in the House of Representatives of the Philippines was held on August 26, 2002 due to Representative Romeo Jalosjos Sr. being dropped from the rolls after being convicted with finality for rape of a minor, Jalosjos' sister won the special election convincingly. Electoral system Each congressional district of the Philippines sends one representative to the House of Representatives. An election to the seat is via first-past-the-post, in which the candidate with the most votes, whether or not one has a majority, wins the seat. Zamboanga Del Norte's 1st Congressional District
Zamboanga del Norte's 1st congressional district is one of the three congressional districts of the Philippines in the province of Zamboanga del Norte. It has been represented in the House of Representatives since 1987. The district encompasses the northernmost portion of the province and consists of the city of Dapitan and adjacent municipalities of La Libertad, Mutia, Piñan, Polanco, Rizal, Sergio Osmeña and Sibutad. Piñan
Piñan, officially the Municipality of Piñan ( ceb, Lungsod sa Piñan; Subanen: ''Benwa Piñan''; Chavacano: ''Municipalidad de Piñan''; tl, Bayan ng Piñan), is a fourth-class municipality in the province of Zamboanga del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 20,221 people. It is also known as New Piñan. Etymology Piñan came from a Subano term ''pinyayan'' which means ''tabuan'' (trading place). Before it was established as a formal settlement, this place has been a trading point between natives to the area and ambulant peddlers. In 1903, Captain Finley, a military governor in Zamboanga, established a ''tabuan'' in what is now known as Barangay Del Pilar. The ''tabuan'' became known as Piñan, and when the municipality was created it was called New Piñan to differentiate it from Piñan.
