2002 Sierra Leonean General Election
General elections were held in Sierra Leone on 14 May 2002 to elect a president and parliament. Incumbent President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah of the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) was re-elected with more than 70% of the votes in the first round, meaning that a second round of voting was not required. In the parliamentary elections, the SLPP received almost 70% of the vote, winning 83 of the 112 seats. The All People's Congress became the main opposition party, replacing the United National People's Party. The United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone was authorised, under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1389, Security Council Resolution 1389 (2002), to assist in the electoral process. John Karefa-Smart
Dr. John Albert Musselman Karefa-Smart (17 June 1915 – 26 August 2010) was a Sierra Leonean politician, medical doctor and university professor. He served as the first Foreign Minister under Sierra Leone's first Prime Minister, Sir Milton Margai. He was an ordained Elder of the United Methodist Church. A medical doctor by profession, Karefa-Smart was one of the founding fathers of the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) in 1951. He was one of Sir Milton Margai's closest political advisors and a close personal friend. From 1957 to 1964, Karefa-Smart was a Member of Parliament of Sierra Leone from Tonkolili District. After the death of Prime Minister Milton Margai in 1964, Karefa-Smart challenged Albert Margai for the SLPP leadership position, but he was unsuccessful, as Albert won the SLPP leadership and succeeded his brother as Sierra Leone's Prime Minister. Elections In Sierra Leone
Elections in Sierra Leone are held on a national level to elect the president and the unicameral Parliament. Sierra Leone has a multi-party system, with two or three strong parties. Both the president and the members of Parliament are elected for five-year terms. The Parliament has 124 members, 112 elected through plurality vote in single-member constituencies and 12 members elected by indirect vote. An independent Electoral Commission, composed of a chairman and four commissioners, is selected by the president, subject to the approval of Parliament. The commission is responsible for voter registration and elections and referendums. and the registration of both voters and political parties.
