The discus throw (), also known as disc throw, is a track and field event in which an athlete throws a heavy disk (mathematics), disc—called a discus—in an attempt to mark a farther distance than their competitors. It is an classical antiquity, ancient sport, as demonstrated by the fifth-century-BC Myron statue ''Discobolus''. Although not part of the current pentathlon, it was one of the events of the Ancient Olympic pentathlon, ancient Greek pentathlon, which can be dated back to at least 708 BC, and it is part of the modern decathlon. Athletics At The 2000 Summer Olympics – Women's Discus Throw
The Women's Discus Throw event at the 2000 Summer Olympics as part of the athletics program was held at the Olympic Stadium on Monday, 25 September and Wednesday, 27 September. The qualifying athletes progressed through to the final where the qualifying distances are scrapped and they start afresh with up to six throws. The qualifying distance was set at 63.00 metres. For all qualifiers who did not achieve the standard, the remaining spaces in the final were filled by the longest throws until a total of 12 qualifiers. Vera Begić
Vera Begić (born 17 March 1982 in Rijeka, SR Croatia, SFR Yugoslavia) is Croatian athlete specialized in discus throwing discipline. Since Vera's mother Jadranka Antunović also was a successful athlete and member of the national team in Yugoslavia (long jump, pentathlon), Vera has been connected to athletics from the early childhood. At the age of 12 she decided to take the discus throwing for her preferred athletic discipline, and soon achieved very good results in the junior level of competition. Vera broke the Croatian record for 21 times, ten of these in senior category, and she was champion of Croatia for twelve continuous years. Eha Rünne (born 25 May 1963 in Tallinn) is a female shot putter and discus thrower from Estonia, who competed in the discus contest at the Athletics at the 1996 Summer Olympics, 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Anna Söderberg (born 11 June 1973 in Knista) is a female discus thrower from Sweden. Her personal best throw of 64.54 metres, achieved in July 1999 in Aremark, is the Swedish record for the event. She has represented her country at the Olympic Games on three occasions – in 2000, 2004 and 2008. She was born in Carshalton, London and competed for Great Britain at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Athletics career Her personal best throw is 61.22 metres, achieved in June 2003 in Loughborough.
